anyone using face detection AF? Seems pretty damn handy, and works pretty good.

If you hold the 'set' button while the white box surrounds your subjects face in face detection AF, a small green square should appear at the nearest eye. That's the auto eye detection AF.

I've been watching this post with interest.

The general consensus is that the A7r works well with EF lenses with the only drawback being AF speed and the benefits being increased IQ in a small compact body.
I have a 6D and various primes and an XE1 + 35mm, I feel that I can combine these cameras into one body which does both jobs, in the case of the XE1, being small and light and perfect for family days out and the 6D for its full frame IQ.

I'm quite nervous about the change having only had Canon before, so do want to keep hold of my Canon lenses as they are good investments. The only one I would sell would be the Zeiss 50mm MP to make way for a similar focal length Loxia and to give the A7r the compact option for days out.

Are there any issues with using the Canon 85L II via an adapter?

How does the Metabones adapter compare to others, is it worth the additional cost?

Reassure me/convince me…… ;-)a

 No thanks!

I'm not loving your lens lineup as a good fit for an a7 series camera. I feel the 85L and 200L II are awesome lenses that need a Canon body. Now if you want an a7R to complement your 6D, then that could work out really well. But replacing your 6D and Fuji for an a7R - with that lens lineup? Not a good move imo. Now, if you had a bunch of MF lenses (Zeiss, TS-E, etc.), I would think differently.

But, you can find out for yourself if the a7R is a good fit for you: use your AF primes in LiveView only for a while and ask yourself: Can I live with this level of AF performance? If you can, then go ahead and make that switch. For sure, I wouldn't want to.

I rented the A7R, 55mm FE and the metabones III from borrowlenses.com for 4 days, then i ditched my 5D Mark III. I suggest you do the same before the big switch.

tips: borrow it wednesday they will have you return it monday.

Goodluck.

I also would recommend to keep a Canon body to use the 85L II. I never use it on the a7/a7r actually.

I didn't quite travel light when I was in the Seychelles, and now I figure out that some 90% of my keepers were taken with the combo a7r/ts-e24. Next time I'll travel lighter that's for sure :p

Here's one of the few with the Rokinon 14:

I am still on the fence with Sony. Main camera 5dmk3 and I picked Fuji XT-1 for light weight option. One thing I would ask is what you shoot? For me it is my kids in play action and model shoots. If I was more into landscapes, I would have jumped into A7r right a way.

Just spent 12 days and 4,000 miles cruising around a few Western states to shoot. One of my first stops was the Alvord Desert in SE Oregon. Awesome spot.

Beautiful shots guys.

Who has pre-ordered the 16-35?

I will just walk over to B&H the day it releases and pick it up. They always have a few for walk ins :)

I dropped my 5dmkIII. Picked up the A7r and FE 55 for small auto focus package. Rock out with a Canon 16-35L for my trip to italy and not once did i miss AF. Its all in the way you shoot. Im not looking back. Glad to see the DSLR camera world embracing small packages. FF was the last hold out (leica was out of reach for many). Sony is pushing the envelope and im along for the ride with a grin :)

I used 85L2 on my former A7 with no problems..... I have not tried it on A7r at the time. I am looking to trade for A7r now so I can have the 85L2 on the glorious 36MP sensor.

for sure, but if sony came out with a native 55/1.2 and 135/2 OSS, i'de be in hog heaven.

a 16-35 type lens, I really dont need or even care for AF, canon's version is excellent, dont mind settling for that. After fooling with facial recognition.... I DEFINITELY want that feature available to me. Toggling AF points with this thing is slow at best, but a working facial recognition, I wont need to toggle AF as much.

speaking of the 85ii, my brother has both the 85ii and FDn 85L, I cant wait to try that old lens out. He says it's much smaller, but still really heavy. Either way, he's going to leave me with one of the 85's

speaking of the weight it is very interesting that 85L2 is 1080 grams, but Zeiss Sony 85 1.4 (which is arguably sharper, well, according to photozone.de tests anyway) is only 560 grams. You can buy a used Zeiss with LA-EA4 adapter for about the same price as used 85L2 alone, and have better and faster AF on your A7/r, plus at half the weight it balances better too.

There is also a Minolta 85 1.4G which was predecessor to the Zeiss which you can get even cheaper and that is actually a very interesting lens wide open which is plenty sharp (at least my copy was).

Just throwing it out there.
