A 70-200 can work. You need to move up and down the field with the play, and wait for the action to come to you. Still though, you won't get the nice isolation/background blur that a longer lens gives.

If your 70-200 is the 2.8, throw a 1.4x extender on it for day games.

Thank you, rdalrt. I've been fine at soccer games with my 70-200 (just the f/4) and was recently asked to shoot some football, which I've never done. This thread has taught me a lot, while simultaneously intimidating me.

You'll be fine, just go take some pictures.

Quiet frankly, I find even 400mm to be short for soccer due to the larger field. If you can get good results at 200mm, then you are Da Man!

The only real issue with football is the night lighting, but if you are used to shooting night soccer then you will be fine.

Lots of great stuff here. I know some of you are using 400s but for those of us without, is a 70-200 enough for H.S. football?

Thanks,
Todd

Yes indeed. I see folks using it all the time. You will need to hover near the line of scrimmage though, next to the team and move alot. It's definitely useful from the 20 yard line to the end zone. That's when I pull mine off the hip.

Thanks for the info and correction. I may try that. Does it take long? I don't like to spend too much time editing them.

nope. I've done it enough that I can spot hit the images quickly and less than a min each if that. I'll see if I can record my screen so you can see exactly whats up. I'm no pro but it's something I've done to help the images look better. To me it's the background OOF noise that makes the image look crap. So NR only the OOF areas with a brush has worked.

Set the feather to 100 and remember you can select that box in LR to show the red always so you can see what your painting.

and then if you go too far into some kind of area you can hold down the control button to turn the brush into a delete so you can remove parts of what you did.

A couple of my brother-in-law going up and getting it. Both were good for 6.

Focus was unfortunately behind the play here but still impressive enough to post i thought. You almost dont even notice the dolphin behind him.

How he ended up with this one is beyond me but he made it happen.

Bartlett vs Cordova this past Friday night.
Challenging lighting conditions as most HS fields but this one had lots of hot spots and dark ones as well.

1. Pull back the highlights a bit.
2. Perhaps a little less contrast increase.
3. Level things out.
4. Bump shadows a bit.
5. Dang near perfect to me.
6. How in the world is that person not falling off the ladder???????

A better question might be what is she doing that on the ladder and why are you taking a picture of this Pat?;)

Also you need to fix the red eye in pic #2.
