It was originally a $4,000USD camera. Your issue is kind of like buying a Lamborghini Gallardo, then being shocked that you need to use a special formulation synthetic oil. It's $27.

So? It is a piece of plastic worth about $.10. The price you pay for the camera has little bearing on the price you pay for a little replacement piece. Each purchase stands on its own merit. Manufacturers like how you think, it means they make even more money from you. Also, there is nothing wrong with asking around to see if you can get it cheaper, like perhaps for 1/5 that cost, which is what happened here.

Your analogy holds no merit either. A better analogy would be that the oil cap on the valve cover was lost and they wanted to charge you $150 for that, when you could have gotten for $30 by just asking around.

I appreciate in it's day it was an expensive camera and as such accessories would also reflect that however the main price of the camera was for the technology it contained. much like the newer cameras. I'll be having a look at the links mentioned before and see if i can get one sorted. I weatherproofing was one of the key selling points for the camera... in fairness they did give me £50 off the display price after i noticed the missing part.

i'm just amazed how much it is for a little bit of plastic! i can get a new battery for only £8 more! would it hurt the cam if it is left uncovered? I guess not so weatherproof.

you just noticed this ! canon plastic is the most $expensive,i have spent a small for. on replacement parts for 1d mk 3 lens hoods ect.

Items sell for, in part, at prices people are willing to pay for them.
