People who are just starting they use 70-200 F2.8. I rarely see a 300mm F4 or 200-400mm F4. In my opinion the most important in sports photography is a very strong competitor separation from the background. This is possible when you have a lens F2.8 500mm with light F6.3 weakly separates the player from the background.
