Went to Valente Open Space around dawn - not much to see as the road department was driving piles for a new bridge - scared off almost all of the birds.

As I returned to my car I saw this BIG Cooper's hawk land in a tree maybe 80 meters away.

That lasted all of 10 seconds before it left for another tree about 200 meters away.

This is the largest Cooper's I've seen to date. At first I thought it might be an eagle as it was that large!

Regards,
GEWB

Well done on the Red-tailed Hawk. Easy way to identify is dark head, lighter area on the chest and a darker belly band.

Well done. This confirms that I have a Coopers in my yard and not a red tailed.

As I've shown before, I'm no expert at ID - in fact I lost my reference book!

I accept the general opionion that it is a red tail but dang this one was bigger than any I've seen before - and I've seen a lot of them! Freak of nature?

Regards,
GEWB

I hope you are not using these photos to ID your hawk as a Cooper's?

Very nice set, though as soon as I saw that Red Tail, I knew what it was! Such a beautiful Hawk.

I dunno, it looks like a pretty standard red tail to me.

gweb and John,

What nice photographs. We have some sort of hawk that patrols our neighborhood but I've never seen him/her when I had a camera close by. I'm looking forward to getting some shots at some point. I might be able to identify him/her when (I hope it's when not if) that happens.
