Tell your kids to each order one of these:

http://www.amazon.com …676&sr=8-1&keywords=Tt560 (external link)

They're less than $40 and then they'll have a slave-capable 270-90 degree swivel head flash that has a wide angle diffuser and catchlight bounce card. It's not 38 GN like the description claims, but it is awesome for what each kid will spend on it.

It's fully manual too, so it'll teach them the proper way to balance strobe light with ambient using a light meter. A skill that is useful to everyone working in studio or on location. Making someone think about light without ETTL will make them much better photographers, the same way working with primes instead of zooms helps with composition, and working in manual instead of program/auto helps with understanding exposure.

That would be great, but majority of the students would not be able to afford this. I have a hard enough time getting the kids to pay the class fee. But I will mention it to them if they're interested. Just wish my school district could set up a PO with amazon so we could get everything that we need and so that my hs students do not need to spend money.

Is there a connection port for a cord?

You mean the PC sync? Yes, there's a PC sync port if that's what you're talking about.

But why use PC Sync cords when you can use these:

http://www.amazon.com …gger+Set+With+2+Receivers (external link)

It's only $20 for a wireless radio trigger set. Forget PC Sync cords. Now you don't have anything for a bunch of kids to trip over.

And while you're at it, buy this:

http://www.amazon.com …sr=8-6&keywords=rosco+gel (external link)

Now you have a gel set with every color of the rainbow for your lighting.

Buy 10 flashes, a set of radio triggers, and the gel swatch book. Then you have a full lighting setup for the kids to build out pretty much any lighting arrangement of their imagination.

Yes, pc sync. I was only asking because I probably have those cords laying around here in my classroom somewhere.
If I had the money I would buy myself. Again, my district can't buy anything from amazon. Needs to be approved vendors that take PO. I know of the rosco gels, I have two sets of my own but thank you for the reminder. Still gotta worry about somehow getting these flashes first.

I would have told the 12 year old daughter, "Screw the iPod, this is a hiking trip and you'll build better memories of this if you look around and absorb in all the sounds and sights instead of listening to music on the hike. We can also have some nice conversations along the way."

It's so disappointing that kids now feel they must have that crap along with them everywhere they go so they don't build a mentality of appreciation. I wonder how a constant need for mental distraction is going to affect their work ethic and employment competitiveness when they are in their 20s and 30s against the kids who don't have that mental habit built.

Loved the shot where the hikers were trying to illuminate the Havasupai falls with their iPhone LED flash to get a proper exposure.

LOL, well it wasn't quite that bad, she was taking it to snap pictures, and the battery life is such that it didn't last too long anyway...

I hike a lot with Scouts, and am more than happy when they plug in (and shut up)
:D

I went to Canon's seminar at the Downtown Sheraton this morning and, in the middle of the opening, there was an explosion in the building and the lights flickered. The hotel was evacuated (some motor blew up).

To Oregon from Mesa, the drive itself takes about 15-16 hours.
