in RAW, i find it better in high iso than the a6000 and the d7100.

Yes, I agree, I too like what I'm seeing. Even in PRINT mode (equalized output for the compared cameras) the 7DII does well, especially in the low-light version (light bulb icon)

I probably won't get mine until Next Tuesday or Wednesday.. since it has to come from Amazon all the way down here in South America. With the 6D, I shoot mostly at 800 - 1600, I'm hoping the extra reach will be a good trade off for lesser ISO performance.

AF at f/8 on a crop body should be insane !!!

AF at f/8 is great news.

However, AF at f/8 on a FF body is more useful in my opinion due to how much resolution a FF sensor requires from a lens as opposed to the 20mp 7DII. I'm talking mostly about wildlife photography here.

When you need af at F/8, that means you're putting a 1.4x tc on a 5.6 lens, or a 2x on a f/4 lens, or maybe stacking a 2x and 1.4x on a f/2.8 lens. So basically you are losing IQ already.

Couple that with the sharp-lens-hungry 20mp sensor of the 7DII, plus some diffraction that starts creeping in (technically starting at f/6.6 but no big deal there; only getting gradually visible as the aperture gets smaller), add atmospheric conditions to that, I mean you are already at astronomical focal lengths, so heat, haze, shooting distance etc. will have an effect on IQ, you're essentially magnifying all crap that is between you and your subject, and after all that you end up with an f/8 (or smaller aperture) image that essentially does not add any resolution to an f/5.6 image taken without your 1.4x TC.

Only on days where the conditions are near perfect there is a chance that your long lens f/8 setup may provide you with better results than a 5.6 no tc setup.

Let's say you have a 100-400L and put a TC on that making it f/8 at 560mm (times 1.6x crop factor = 896mm equivalent). If you're shooting a duck from a long distance you may end up with the same quality image as if you shot the duck at 400mm 5.6 and upscaled it in PS.

I've been there, done that. I have actually tried shooting at f/8 to f/11 with stacked TCs using live view on my 70D. AF is instant with the dual pixel live view AF but image quality was not very good. I was better off shooting without the 2nd tc.

I also owned a 100-400L for a year, a very sharp copy (sometimes I wish I still had it).
I used it occasionally with a 1.4x kenko pro TC shooting with my 7D, but gave up after a few outings since IQ was not any better than shooting without the tc. I know that in a clean-air, nicely lit studio it may perform better, but out in the real world of bird photography it simply didn't.
Also, even thought a camera can AF at f/8, the more light hits the AF sensor, the faster and more accurate it is. So f/8 is not going to be super accurate all the time. That's just another thing to keep in mind.

Those first two images are killer. Obviously technique and conditions will be a factor at 1600mm equiv or 1920 in his case.

Yeah, hard to say, BB said it would arrive, but then again, their inventory managementment and I have not gotten along all this week...

I'm not far behind you. I have a couple things to sell and plan to post them on POTN sometime in November. I think my 60D with its extras and my Newton rotating flash bracket will get me close since I already have over half the cash saved up.

If the sales don't go well, I'll still have the money by February. So.... soon. I don't want one right now because I really want to wait until the L bracket is available and Lightroom and Photoshop will open the files. I don't expect there to be a long wait for those things to happen.

I intend to use DPP zeroed out, convert to TIFF and then import to PS to PP.
