 My reason for the possible switch is I'm leaning towards wanting an f/2.8 UWA lens and I'm not particularly enthused by the performance of the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II. It's super cool that a7 series users have so many lenses to choose from. :D

What about the Tokina 16-28mm f2.8 ? Then you could use it on your 5D and the AF works on the A7 (but slowly)

David, the 14-24 + canon adapter for aperture control + ND throttle + A7r is an interesting combination. I'm using the ND throttle for long exposures on the Rokinon 14, and technically should work with the 14-24, but you dont get any aperture control. Quite pleased with the ND throttle (variable ND filter / EF -> nex mount).

I might be able to borrow the 14-24, but would need to get a nikon to EF adapter with aperture control to test. I've definitely been eyeing that lens because I really do love 14mm.

That's a BEAUTIFUL shot Charlie!

Can you explain this "ND throttle"?

Good suggestion. Definitely a consideration - that is a sharp lens. A while back I watched a Dave Dougdale youtube video where he was choosing between the Tokina and the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II. Although the Tokina was sharper there was some fly-in-the-ointment issue with the Tokina that made him go with the Canon. I need to re-watch that to see what his concern was. It's definitely a nice low-cost option, so thanks for suggesting it.

Cool info and awesome shot! I'm with you on 14mm. I had the 14L II and absolutely loved it, but eventually sold it because, while I do love 14mm, it's not the easiest focal length to shoot and I had other priorities. However, a 14-24mm offers more usability for varying situations.

Speaking of the Rokinon 14mm, I have given much thought about that as well for a nicely-priced/very high image quality solution. If I only wanted it for landscapes I would probably go that route (for 14mm) as I've seen plenty of stunning landscape work with that optic. But from all I've read it just doesn't do as well at f/2.8.

Basically a variable ND filter put in between the glass and the mount, which solves the problem of using ND filters (and filters in general) with super wide lenses.

The ND throttle + 14 is an odd beast. The flange distance is slightly changed, and infinity feels like a true infinity. I cant say I've done F2.8 much at all, but I suspect this lens has a bit of field curvature to make it practical to use @ 2.8. Corners are certainly sharp even @ 2.8 from my testing, but I havent shot any milky way with it to give a fair evaluation. I think that's my only scenario for using 2.8. I just love having 14mm, and for now, I jump right to the 24-105 if I need a 24mm solution.

look at this compare between Canon and Sony 16-35 mm lens...maybe the canon is a better buy even with the added weight and size?

Indeed, Im loving it. The weird lines in the bokeh is because they were all taken through mesh fencing
