I was recently contacted by a traveling model about setting up a shoot while she was in my area. We discussed ideas, rates, length of shoot, location of shoot (my studio), date and time, escort presence, etc. After agreeing on all of the above we were all set when the day before the shoot...... (Here comes the drama)

I got a message saying that she hadn't slept well two nights before our shoot. She wants to know if she can push out start time out a little because she would still be tired. I told her we really couldn't move it much because of prior commitments.

Then I got a message that her car had broken down. An hour later the car was fixed but they were now 5 hours behind so she was hoping we could move the start time for our shoot by a few hours. I told her I couldn't because of previous commitments.

Then she asked me how long we were actually going to shoot AND if I had any flexibility on the start time.

At this point I began to really suspect something. My guess was that she had another booking for the same morning, probably paying more and she was trying to move mine so that she could take the more attractive booking. Unfortunately, I didn't have any flexibility to go later.

So I nicely suggested to her that if something had come up, she simply take it and not worry about it.

She replied asking again how long I wanted to shoot and that she was trying hard to "work things out". I'm thinking to myself that we already have everything worked out but whatever.

So I responded that we'd discussed the length of the shoot at the beginning of our thread.

She didn't understand the term thread and came back with some frustration and asked why I wouldn't "answer a simple question".

I explained what a thread was and pointed out the details from earlier in our discussion. I then went on to suggest that she was probably tired and frustrated running on lack of sleep and dealing with a problematic car and that maybe it was better to plan for another time. I went on to point out that the work we were booking wasn't worth all the stress she was undergoing, etc.

No response.

Then, later, after the time for our planned shoot (probably after the one that bumped my time slot) I got a cordial but distant reply.

However, I booked a local girl I'd been wanting to shoot for a while. She was available in that same time slot. And I was BLOWN away. She was incredible. I was SO pleased to have been dissed by the original model and have the opportunity to shoot with the local gal. What a wonderful experience.

Thanks for stopping in and having a look.

This is EXACTLY why I have everyone I shoot with sign a contract before I book the shoot. If they don't sign, I don't book. My time is too valuable to waste on no shows and cancellations. You simply put a clause in there that says if they're more than a certain amount of time late, or if they don't cancel according to your terms laid out that they will be charged a $250 (or whatever amount you feel comfortable with) penalty for breach of contract.

I used to have lots of problems with models flaking before I started doing this. I can honestly say it's made a difference for me.

Ledrak,

Just curious your contract, I'm interested doing same thing. How do get away with like models canceling for health, sick, etc. Would any of it hold up in small claims court. I mean if model says sick, does she need get doctors note, or car breaks down get proof. Just curious how a contract to model flaking or calling in before shoot hold up.

Do you have a 24hr or 48hr cancel policy etc.

I'm going google one, but do know where I can see a contract like that for cancelations?

I can PM you the wording I use in my contract so you can see an example if you like. I don't have the contract in front of me right now so I don't remember the exact wording off hand... but I do allow for emergencies (such as being sick, accidents, etc.) Depending on the emergency and how much I trust the model I may ask for documentation.

And yes, you can certainly go after them in court... but again you're talking time + court fees, and honestly for me 90% of the time it just wouldn't be worth the hassle. Just the fact that the model knows they're contractually bound and that I "can" go after them financially for flaking out on a shoot is enough for them to take you seriously and act professional.

Like I said, I used to have serious problems with models flaking and I can honestly say that since I started doing this it has made a big difference for me.

Yea PM me, I agree the time and effort to goto court. I just like to know that if flake when MUA, hair, etc are waiting. That it won't be tolerated.

Most of the girls who flake probably wouldn't want to sign something like that so it's a good screening tool for them. However, there are probably very good models who would not sign it, either. It might be too good of a screening tool for them. :)

I've personally never had a problem with a model not wanting to sign the contract.

Find one solid model. Be easy to work with, and deliver good shots. Her friends will stand in line to work with you.

Then work your way out to friends of friends, you'll have your pick of who to work with.

So I have noticed something...now I am not one to shoot nudes but I found this interesting nonetheless. Many female models will say no Nudity on their front pages but when going to their portfolio half of the photos are of them fully nude...k....

It means they don't want to shoot explicit pornography with a stranger.

Some models go along with the boyfriend of the day. Some don't like them modeling at all, don't like them doing glamour or nudes, etc. As boyfriends come and go that status changes as well.
