Took some photos of my overhauled & tuned GM / Opel cylinderhead + valvecover for sale purposes.

In garage I put some papersheets under the cyl.head then positioned four speedlites and shoot-through umbrellas around it and started shooting.

Any thoughts? :)

Oh, my bad. ^

Resized the photo. Should be ok now... it's 1024 on its longest side.

Uploaded that oversize photo straight from my Facebook.

OK, so...

If it were me, I would want to see as much in focus as possible, so a smaller aperture for better DOF would be the ticket.
Then you could start dialing lights in so the backside of the block isn't blown out.

After more thinking, perhaps a key on right, fill on left, and one directly behind the block and aimed at it, so it would separate the block from the background a little.
BTW I love the way the freeze plugs look. Smooooooooooooth.

My son's destination wedding reception/beach party that was illuminated by about a dozen 40w bulbs in the blue hanging lanterns. I set up two 430EX ii speedlites with Phottix Odin receivers on stands in opposite corners of the main party area (about 50' apart); one 3 feet high and the other about 10 feet. Had a Phottix Mitros+ on a flash bracket attached to the camera; all three were on manual (1/8 to 1/2 power) and were controlled by the Odin transmitter on the camera. I was able to set my camera to ISO 200, F7.1, 1/160 sec, and just left it like that all night; would occasionally adjust the Mitros+ up or down to change the fill if required.

Another person shooting at the same time, with a single on-camera 430EX, had to shoot at ISO 1600, F3.5, 1/60, and she ended up with the typical photos with bright centers and rapid light fall off; mind you her set up was considerably less expensive, and didn't require extra baggage fees!

I hadn't used multiple flash set-ups much to this point, and this was the first time I had tried something like this under these conditions. I was very happy with the results. I took about 400 images over a few hours, and all the speedlites still had ample battery power to spare; was using Eneloops all round.

It was a lot of gear to haul across a continent and two countries away, but the results were well worth it. The sample photo below is actually a discarded image, but I'm posting it as it shows the effect of the three lights.
