Have you checked out the new yongnuo HSS options? I think the flashes are around the £100/$160 mark and you can control them remotely with the 622 triggers
I have the Yongnuo 560 III and RF-603 combo right now. I am really happy with the results. With the new 560-TX, I can do a two speedlight setup with controls on camera for another $125.00 plus the ND filter. However, to go to the HSS setup, it would be an investment of $472 for a two off camera speedlight option (two 568's, 622-tx and two 622's) and I wouldnt have a ND filter that I could potentially use on other lenses. There are other benefits to the 622's over the 560-tx (such as if I switch to strobes or another kind of speedlight), but I don't know if I will actually ever use that as the simplicity of using a single 560-tx on camera, and then two 560 III's on stands without recievers is so nice.
But now I am getting this thread off topic. I have some more thinking to do, and really just need to rent this lens. The problem is that the weather is really taking a turn for the worse, and I don't know the next time that I will be able to get outside and shoot anything.

I have to add that I have a medical problem Fibromyalgia that is why I can't hand hold the lens, really not any lens too much anymore. But maybe the best option would be to rent one and try it out first. With that said I would never ever give up my 135, I did once and regretted it.
Thanks for the clarification. Sorry to hear about your condition, but glad to see that you are still working at it. Not having tried the 135L is the only thing keeping me from switching to Nikon right now.
