Cutaway of an 18 cylinder radial engine. I can't imagine the engineering that went into designing and manufacturing engines like this.

I haven't seen that cutaway of the radial before. Interesting images.

This is a picture of a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 28 cylinder radial aircraft engine take at the Virginia Aviation Museum a few weeks ago.

Believe it or not that radial has way more moving parts than a modern jet engine. Its
also more complex to assemble and maintain. Amazing what the greatest generation did
back then, it will never be repeated.

All without the use of CAD/Solid works, calculators, 6 axis automated tooling. All drawn up long hand and with maybe a slide rule, prototyped and hand machined the old and slow way. It really is amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it and have skilled people working together to get the job done. We sometimes forget just how easy we have it now a-days when it comes to figuring stuff out....

Thank you so much for posting these. Many years ago, I had an orthopedic surgeon ( ex motorcycle racer, so saw him frequently ) who flew in the 8th out of England in WW11. And I was a crew member on a B 47, 360 Bomb Squadron, Davis Monthan AFB in the late 50's.

I forget which aircraft it was, maybe the P-51, that went from a drawing on the floor to flying in 100 days. Someone correct me if I have the details wrong.

I don't know why but I have always been impressed with the B-47. Especially the way they were supposed to lob a nuclear weapon onto the target then loop out of the way of the blast. From all aspects it is an impressive airplane.
