Is there any difference between the "velvet" and "matte" versions of this lens? This lens seems like a steal at the sub-$300 range they've been going for lately..

There's no optical difference, the earlier matte finish had flaking issues and i believe the velvet finish was to resolve that issue....which also made it look a whole lot nicer.

I though about upgrading to the 'Art' version but every time i use this lens it amazes me. I use it mostly at f2 and it's incredibly sharp at that aperture.

Amazon blew these out at $299 a few days ago. Wish I would have jumped :(

I agree that f2 is where this lens shines

I do like using mine at f2 as well, but it's still nice at f1.4.

Do you mean this lens vs. the "Art" lens?

No I mean when this lens first showed up on the scene I remember disliking the fuzzy-velvet like feel. Somewhere along the way a smooth black matte finish showed up. Wondered if anything had changed about the lens but guess not?

I believe the matte version was a revised version of the lens to fix an early AF issue.

But according to the sigma's tech, they still receive a bunch of returns (include me) due to af issues. So I guess the improvement on its finish does not have anything to do with af issues. Just guessing though.

From what I remember the issues were even worse prior to the matte version. If you do a google search you may find some stuff about it. I remember when I first got mine I read people advising others to make sure they get the new matter revised version.

Nothing changed with the matt version apart from the finish.

When I returned my 1st copy (which is the newer finish), the store supervisor gave me the privilege of choosing a good copy. Out of the 5 units I mounted on my camera, I only found two good ones and from there I chose the better one. My 1st copy focuses poorly from 1.8 wider and fails in live view.

Finally feel like I'm starting to hit my stride with this lens.

Sounds like a great store then. When I originally purchased mine I had some issues with AF consistency and took it back the next day, the manager told me it was not their problem and to take it to the Sigma dealer for Australia (CR Kennedy).

Mine was very inconsistent on a 550D but on my 6D it was not only sharp, but also consistent wide open too. Unfortunately I got a 35mm lens and I now prefer the focal length so I sold my copy. I still browse this thread regularly though because it is still a great lens and I do miss it at times!

Whoa, no return policies in your place? That was bad. I bought mine at Sigma's authorized dealer and repair center here in my country. I even had the lens (1st copy) in my hand for almost a month before the replacement.

No they try their best to send you off to the Australian distributor and don't want to help. The customer service is horrible not to mention the majority of the staff have no photography knowledge. I wish we had a proper Sigma dealer in Aus, repairs and replacements would probably be much easier!

Okay... this was shot at f/3.5 because my brand new 5D is FRONT FOCUSING!!!!!!!!!! Sorry :o

Camera: 5D
Aperture: f/3.5
Speed: 1/1250
ISO: 100

Straight out of camera... oh, I did convert to jpeg... not me, the image... oh, and the 100% crop... very cloudy...

Yes, when it comes to AF, this lens is piece of ****. So sad because optically 50 1.4 EX is just great! I have it and I like it.. it's just the AF that makes me sick sometimes.
