+1,000,000 and all of the other great shooters who used that technique to overcome limitations of equipment to display their artistic vision. People need to learn to use the equipment they have and how to work around the limitations to express there vision.

Not to mention the Zone system and its goal of improving DR - bunch of amateurs Didn't understand zilch about the "quality of light"

We do. That doesn't mean you disregard a new tool that can help you achieve your vision with less work. It'd be like a mechanic who refuses to use an air ratchet because his hand tools work just fine.

Only amateurs use auto focus and metering.

Full manual metering and focusing for me. Hardcore!!!

My 5D III can't match the shadow recovery of my a7R, but I do enjoy "making do." In many scenarios I can, with multiple frame stitching and multiple exposures easily outresolve and out-DR my a7R using my 5D III. So, even with sensor limitations there are great ways of overcoming those limits.

Naturally, there are tremendous benefits to getting all the data you want in one click though.

I love what you said earlier John, it's all about "learning to use the equipment they have and how to work around the limitations to express their vision." The "to express their vision" part is priceless.

Just like he probably rolls over in his grave every time someone says, "Again, tell me why a landscape photographer NEEDS to lift shadows." And claims that doing so is the stuff of amateurs.

That some do it poorly is no argument that it shouldn't be done at all.

I don't know about you, but I use manual flash too. I also use manual white balance. Oh yeah, and I don't use a tripod: I hold the camera manually with my hands only.

I have never seen water that was obviously rendered as light gray nor black shadows that were clearly rendered to dark gray in any work by Ansel Adams. He had an acute grasp of the human eye's visual perception and how to create imagery that "looked right".

That's because he realized that you don't have to always go crazy about an ability to recover shadows. Some stuff is dark and in shadows because it's supposed to be in shadow. Haha. You don't need detail apparent for everything! That's why HDR looks so fake to all of us.

Can you please provide documentation proving that no professional landscape photographer ever has had the "need to lift shadows in his work"? You've clearly drawn a line that separates professional from amateur; amateurs recover shadows and professionals, like you and CRChemist, don't. Please submit proof in support of that claim.
