I wasn't planning on capturing any plane photos but I was near Dulles Int'l Airport and I knew that the daily Air France from Paris arrived sometime around 4pm so I pulled out my camera and waited a few minutes for it to fly over. Not the best angle in the world but sometimes we just have to work with what we're given!

The lighting is beautiful!

Finally after nearly 10 years in service, I think I saw my first ever A380 on final into LAX while riding with my dad down a near by high way. It was kind of far away and because of that, I'm not even 100% sure that's what I saw lol.

Nice shot, Sadly, it's too big for the forum 1280px x 1280px limit.

The lighting was wonderful for a northern approach into Dulles. The southern approach is more typical so I lucked out with the winds yesterday.

It's a monster! Great shot!

Btw, where did you take this? I know it was near Dulles. I'm local. I saw my first A380 a couple years ago from the Udvar-Hazy Center. I assume this was landing to the north, yes?

UPDATE: I went to your Flickr page, and know it was landing on 19L. Were you at Dulles 28 Centre (with Wegmans)?

That's exactly where I was. I was at Target for this shot. I need to find a spot closer to the airport, maybe down off Old Ox Road, when the planes are landing from the north.

I was at Udvar-Hazy last month. Very interesting place!

Good luck. It's hard getting good viewing close to Dulles.

For approaches from the south, I found that Ellanor C. Lawrence Park is pretty good, but it isn't great.

It's too bad the airport authority doesn't make a little parking area between 28 and 1R maybe at McLearen Rd. McCarran Airport in Las Vegas has a parking area on the south side of the airport with an open view of the airport. It is positioned directly in front of the spot where planes landing on 25L/R touch down...that's what Dulles needs!

I assume you know about DCA, Reagan National. While the planes are smaller (757, 737, A320, RJs), you can get close enough to take great photos, regardless of the main takeoff/landing direction. If you don't know of the viewing places, there Gravelly Point to the north. It's in line with the runway. You're right by the localizer. To the south is Daingerfield Island, which isn't even close to being an island. Regardless, it's along the Potomac, perfect for viewing departures and arrivals.

The park at DCA let's you get close enough that you can tell if the copilot shaved or not.
