//A similar story a few years ago at Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. An official is screaming at the top of his lungs: No photos! Nobody listens to him, so the guy walks among the tourists telling them that, but as soon as he goes back to his post the shutters stark clicking again.

Finally, there are museums in Europe that allow photography but want the tourists to pay for the "privilege", usually $3 - $5.

The Sistine Chapel was full of folks with GoPros on poles paying zero attention to the no pictures request.

The Casino in Monaco didn't allow cameras inside, asked me to "check it". Went to the check counter... it was a clerk with a bunch of cubby holes, hand writing a check # on a small scrap of paper. I just left.

Since when? I was here in 2009 and took tons of pictures... in fact I took pictures everywhere in Paris and was never asked not to.

Since some time between early 2009 and early 2011! Photography was allowed in the D'Orsey in 2009, but not during my 2011 visit.

More and more museums are prohibiting photography. I even discussed it with Prado officials, whose policy has been changed from OK to No. They said that people kept using flash, despite signs and warnings, therefore they had no choice but to prohibit using a camera, even though they do not require you to check it.
Elsewhere, where the same policy is in effect but few docents or guards to enforce it, people were shooting video, using in-camera flashes, ignoring the signs.

I can understand then if it's because of flash. It is annoying. I wish people would follow the rules instead of ruining it for everyone else.

I remember at Sintra's Pena Palace (near Lisbon, Portugal) the guards were really strict about that. No photography of any kind. When they heard a shutter click from my wife's camera they forced her to delete all the photos that she took. In the meantime, while they were busy with her, I escaped with mine!

Thankfully, most museums still allow photography without flash. However, photography is not allowed in areas where private collections are exhibited.

And maybe it's people like you trying to circumvent the system and sneak a photo that has escalated the ban from no flash to no cameras at all. Well done!

Sure, of course it was me who screwed up the whole European museum system. I am also the cause of police patrols on highways because I regularly exceed 65 mph. And many other things.

No, but it's attitudes like yours where somehow the rules don't apply to you that screw it for all of us. I'm sure the museums just got tired policing the people with flashes that would sneak a shot when no one was looking and finally made it simple on themselves and said no cameras period.

Now we got you sneaking shots again and pretty soon you'll have to check your camera in before entering the museum.

I bet you are In your early twenties.

A sales pitch for the Sony A7s silent shutter and monitor off controls. No sound, no clicks, no LCD light shining.

Statue, Voigtlander 35mm f1.2 @ 5.6, ISO 12800, shutter 1/60s.

Painting, Sigma 12-24mm @ 24mm, f5.6 @ 1/60s, ISO 1250.

In my own town's museums, Turin (Italy), cameras are still allowed to shoot, of course with out flash.
Last June we went visitino the Egyptian Museum and no problem at all.

I am well into my sixties, and in my life I have learned not to judge other people without knowing them.

On the net you judge by what they post and you "sneaking" a photo where you were explicitly told not to take any photos And then crowing about it says all.
