Well if the contemporary has been discontinued, then by default I'm going with the Tamron. Sport is out of my budget and I don't really want a huge lens I can't carry around. The Contemporary caught my eye because of that panning OS setting and coming with a strap. I'm really bummed to hear this. I hope the people at Sigma change their minds in the coming months and launch it.

I wonder if Sigma's testing found that it couldn't compete well enough with the Tamron at the price they were targeting, so dropped its development in favor of just the Sport.

Or alternatively, maybe they decided they would be able to eventually drop the price of the Sport version enough that they didn't need the Contemporary. Now that would be nice!

or maybe IQ too close to the sport that they didnt want to cannibalize their own sales

if IQ is noticeably better than tamron, then they shoot their own feet, worse than tamron, then might not sell.

Possible it is.

I see Sigma has stopped the 24-105 art lens for now, but not the Contemporary 150-600.

Yeah.. i find it hard to believe that sigma cancelled the contemporary version.. they'd have done their market research well before ever building a prototype.. i'm guessing B&H changed it to cancelled or whatever as the lead time to actually getting a lens would be sometime well into next year.. i mean, the sports version isn't even shipping in any great volumes.. just a handful..

I emailed sigma about the shipping date of preorders of the sport version. And when they would be readily available. This was the reply.
Hello Troy,
*************** We are shipping the Sports version of the lens presently but the demand is far greater than the supply, preorders and backorders will be filled first on an as placed basis. If you have not ordered the lens yet it probably will not be readily available until March of next year.

Managed to get back in time to go up to Pt Cook RAAF Museum today so here's some shots.. I used a tripod with gimble head and the front is definitely heavy.. Certainly going to take a bit of getting used to and I'm reasonably happy with the shots I took (for a first outing.. will go again on Sunday).. I felt the autofocus was definitely a step up above the original, pre firmware fix, tamron.. and I can't help but feel IQ is also a step up.. I can now see the rivets on the plane, individually.. not just a blur of pixels..

Can upload some RAWs if theres much interest.. Used lightroom 5.7 which had a profile, some light adjustments were done as was a little sharpening.. Taken on a 5d Mk3

How do you find the general lens performance (not just IQ) against the Sigma 120-300 w/ TCs? Like can you feel it's much snappier and accurate not hobbled by them?

Vladdo did you shoot any shots of aircraft in flight at any lower shutter speeds utilising the OS? I generally like to limit my shutter speed to 1/160 on prop aircraft.

Edit: later today or over the weekend, I'll pull out the 120-300+2x TC, Tamron 150-600 & Sigma 150-600 and take some photos down the street to compare IQ.. Keep in mind that I haven't done any micro adjustments so it may not be an accurate test.

To me, I've always felt that the 120-300 sports + 2x tc has always lacked something.. The keeper rate was always low, the AF was slower/less accurate and IQ dropped of substantially compared to when the TC wasn't used. Yesterdays first test was quite promising and it felt really good.. The AF felt really quick, didn't hunt like the tamron does, and kept it in focus.. I don't know how you'd go with handholding it.. Once extended it becomes a very long, heavy lens.. the 300 wasn't nearly as long and much more handholdable..

I shot some at f8 but they came out underexposed so have had to brighten them up in LR, shots at 6.3 were fine.. I've still yet to go back at analyse what I shot and to do a pixel peep at what apertures gave the best IQ.. It's probably more my lack of not changing iso/shutter speeds that produced poor f8 results..

I've never been able to accurately achieve satisfactory results with low shutter speeds.. I realise it's possible but for whatever reason, i can never seem to get sharp pics.. so, these days I just don't bother.. I realise it doesn't look as nice but for me, i can't seem to do it.. even on a tripod..
