It's been 10 months since release, now that (I'd hope) more people have this lens in their hands, what are the strengths and weaknesses of this lens in comparison to the original 100-400? My primary use would be birds and wildlife, and later BIF but that's just a pipe dream until I upgrade from my T1i to a 7D.

I'm probably going to wait for the sigma 150-600 contemporary to release before making a purchase of a zoom, but that's not going to stop me from thinking about these two in the meantime :D

Heya,

I'll keep it simple:

Optically as good.
600mm > 400mm. Not even a debate.
Cheaper new
1lb weight difference only
Focus limiter & modern VC (IS)

Fantastic for wildlife on any camera.

Very best,

^^^+1, well said. Finally, it's a 1998-design-lens vs a 2013 one :D

How does this lens perform for BIF? If it has focus locked at the point of takeoff, can it continue to keep focus with some degree of success?

Heya,

Look at the last two pages. I had no problem tracking an osprey at 600mm on a junk T4i.

It doesn't focus as fast as my USM primes (85 F1.8 & 200 F2.8L, or even as fast as a 70-200 USM). But it's fast enough. There's plenty of examples in this thread of birds in flight with this lens. And it doesn't even take a fancy autofocus system. Just takes technique and practice. Fancy AF systems help though ;).

Small birds will be difficult, especially fast small birds. Keeping a 600mm field of view on something small, at close enough range to nearly fill the frame will easily be too fast for you to physically move the barrel of the lens and keep it on it. That's not the AF or lens's fault. That's just not realistic.

I can handhold BIF that are large with this lens no problem.
Small birds, I'm not as good with. I can do small birds at 400mm easier. But 600mm takes a lot of technique to maintain smaller faster birds in flight.

Very best,

Very best,

Thank you for the detailed response! I've had very good BIF success with my 70-300 for hawks/eagles/kestrels but as one would expect, 300mm is often just to short to properly fill the frame without an aggressive crop. A friend of mine locally just got one along with a 70D and he is raving about it, even for handheld scenarios. I've also seen quite a bit that 5280pics has been posting on a local FB page (great images 5280!). I had been holding out for the Sigma 150-600C, but the more I look into this lens, the more I may have to just pull the trigger on this.

Am I correct the tripod collar cannot be removed when the lens is mounted to a camera?

Very best,

I agree with all the above except panning and tracking. Here the old 100-400 beats the hell out of the Tamron. Not even a contest. Focus speed is about on par, maybe a tiny advantage for the Canon.

Quite frankly, I cannot wait to rent the new 100-400 and the two Sigmas.

Cheers.

Heya,

Productive day at 600mm again.

First, a few tests.

I was at La Chua trail in Gainesville for the gators and birds. But a big jet came by, so I went for it real fast.

600mm, F8, ISO 800, 1/4000s. This is pretty much SOOC, no cropping.

IMAGE: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7496/15715685517_a50708b690_z.jpg
IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/pWJZM8 (external link) IMG_1641 (external link) by Mwise1023 (external link), on Flickr

Later, more tests, I didn't have ducks, but we had some cats around. So I went for testing VC and hand-holding technique for low frame rates at 600mm on APS-C. I went as low as I could tolerate before it got too soft from motion.

600mm, F8, ISO 1600, 1/40s. VC in use.

600mm, F8, ISO 1600, 1/60s. VC in use.

600mm, F8, ISO 800, 1/60s. VC in use.

IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/pWHuJx (external link) IMG_1688 (external link) by Mwise1023 (external link), on Flickr

And some things that move a bit, but still a low shutter for the subject:

600mm, F8, ISO 1600, 1/250s. VC in use.

IMAGE: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7566/15899461251_af23a9383a_z.jpg
IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/qdYTUg (external link) IMG_1683 (external link) by Mwise1023 (external link), on Flickr

I've tested in the past, but so far, the VC is still quite impressive for such a long lens.

Very best,

Heya,

Tonight is a great moon, so as the sun fell, grabbed a shot of it using a Kenko 2.0x PRO 300 series DGX TC.

So this is 600mm + 2.0x TC = 1200mm, on APS-C, for 1920mm. Shot at F8, so real world F16 aperture.

Manually focused on a tripod.

Indeed. I know one of the other members there that recently got one and he has gotten some great images with it as well. I test drove the Tammy today at a metro area camera shop. Color me impressed! They only had one...but I did not leave with it. :(
