The world continues to wait for Canon to jump back into the resolution race, and it looks like they will be in 2015 (though we have previously said they would in 2014). A few new mentions of a 50mp camera coming in the first half of 2015 to which there will be 2 variants. One with a low pass filter, and another without. I’m not sure Canon would get into 2 SKUs for one camera body, though they have done it for astronomy camera purposes. The camera will not be an EOS-1 style camera and would be a new camera above the 5D line. You’re free to call it the “3D”, but I’ve never been a fan of that name simply because it could be confusing to consumers.

not to sure about the name, why go to 3D. both the 5D and the 1 series are due for refresh. I could see them do the 50mpx in a 1 series first esp one with AA and one without AA.

of course it's just a rumour.

I can't see it in a 1D body - it's competing directly against the D810 and successors, and it would be a pretty poor showing by Canon if they releawed a $6k camera with identical capabilities to Nikon's $3k camera, the main difference being an inbilt grip (which is a downside to the landscape and other travelling photographers likely to use this body).

I reckon the age of the non-sports 1D body are probably gone, the 1Ds3 was insanely expensive and roundly eclipsed by the 5D2 for conveniance other than the latter's horrible AF, and the 5D3 cleared all that up. Whilst I prefer a 1D body, that's down to the environment i've been shooting for the last couple of years, with unpredictable and often extremely dangerous animals, for most people something built and weighing like a tank simply isn't nessesary or desirable anymore if you can put it all into something a lot lighter and only marginally not like a tank.

Who knows though

I agree with this. Beyond people who make their income from photography (it would be a write off anyway), I can only see the rich buying a 1DX. Here in Canada, after taxes the body goes for just under $7k. How many people are able make that purchase?

It's not the absolute cost that would be a problem.

It's that, if they went down that route, Nikon would then be offering a similarly-capable body for half the price. After all, the D810 has the same top-level AF system, the same dual cards, weather sealing and other features bar frame rate of the D4s, so it's hard to think of anything extra that Canon could offer to justify double the price (assuming the D810's successor stays around the same initial price point).

Canon is going to be a world of hurt when when the 5D4 comes out at $4k after tax, and the D810 is selling for sub $3k.

Canon needs to directly answer the 810. I can see the 5D line splitting into a sport shooter and a studio shooter.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

The 5D3 isn't a sport shooter - it's more general-purpose.

I can see:
1D - Low-resolution, high fps (fast action)
3D - High-resolution, low fps (studio/landscape)
5D - Mid resolution, mid fps (general-purpose)
6D - Cheap

1D, 3D and 5D would share essentially the same AF system, just like Nikon's D4s, D810 and D750. 6D would be a budget line.

I don't see canon doing this at all. they already have two sports shooter, the 1dx and the 7dmk2.

but your right about directly answering the 810 esp around price.

no it doesn't. They are all a notch down from the performance / level of the d4s.

Nope. The D4s has a higher frame rate, but the same AF system.

That seems about right - quite logical. It's odd, though, it slots the expensive general purpose 5D as competing against the cheapish D750. Regardless of direct product comparisons, the addition of the D750 this year may have helped bring more clarity to both Canon and Nikon's DSLR lineups in the form of your list.

If Canon does indeed add a high resolution DSLR it's going to mean that Canon will finally have a DSLR lineup that will respond to everyone's unique needs.
