I just bought a 1D Mk III and although weather conditions are bad over here at the moment (a very dark grey with really no light to speak off), I took it out for a quick test round in the park this afternoon. Feels very different from my old 1D II N. There's definitely a learning curve here and that includes processing. Still, if I can get an image like this in conditions as difficult as today, I'm looking forward to good conditions!

I did a lot of reading on the forum and admiring a lot of photos. I took the plunge and bought a 1D Mark III and truly love it! I love it for birds and wildlife and used it for my daughters last year of crew. Everything works so much better than I imagined it would. Now I have to learn how to use it to take a picture worthy of posting with the amazing shots posted on here.

Thanks, Jennifer! It's one of several test shots on a quick walk in the park with the new camera. You would think it's a lot like the 1DIIN, but it isn't. This definitely takes some getting used to. But very pleased so far. Thanks again. :)

I have a question. Firmware is v. 1.2.5 on my new 1D3 and I saw there is a newer version. Should I upgrade?

Whoa, I've had my 1D MKIII for 7 years, always thought I kept up to date, but here I only have firmware 1.3.0. I didn't realize there was a new one.

Hi Jen

I made the 1D3 to 1D4 switch just recently. It has entered my mind ever since the transaction that since the market value for the 1D3 is so low compared to it's qualities (I got a grand, and the sale included two 32GB cards and 2 Canon batteries) I could have kept it, and just added the 1D4 instead of substituting it for the older body.
On the other hand, I did this before, keeping a 50D for a time after I got a 7D, and it worked out I never used it again.
That's what I thought would happen if i kept the 1D3 when I had a 1D4 to use, so I let it go.

Likewise in my case. The two feel and operate essentially identically, and I really like NOT having to shoot TWO 1D bodies anymore (did that for years with the 1D3 and 1D2)
So no, I would never pick up the 1D3.

So, what I'm getting from both of you is that you don't regret not keeping your 1D3, right? Maybe I'm just too attached to the older models. I had this experience with the 5Dc, wherein I got rid of it only to purchase another one to take its place. I'm afraid this may happen again with the 1D3. -?

Without doubt the 1D Mk III is the best buy in a pro camera there is. Period.

That is, until the 1D Mk IV comes down in price, correct? :-)
