Nice pictures. Can't believe you got that close to the hawk; I've spent days trying and never get that close even using a 400mm lens with a 1.4x extender! Lucky you.

I usually start with f-5.6 depending on what I want for DOF, and try to keep my shutter speed at 1/ focal lenght or higher for action shots. The trade off is increased ISO.
