Northern finches have still not descended upon us en masse, so I am reduced to photographing what few regulars we have. Fortunately, I love them all, especially the jaunty and colorful blue jays.

Whoa! I sure don't know what caused the posterization of the second image. Hmmm????.......

Very nice shots. I was going to comment that you made an interesting BG choice in #2.

Loving the shots Al, but guess I'm dense-do not see what everyone is referring to in the 2nd shot-? BJ'S sure look better in a natural setting than mine on the feeder.

It looks like the color mode has been reduced to a 256 color web palette.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I've never seen a background rendition like No. 2 in all the posts I've made; nothings changed on my end; could it be something with the newly designed site?

Very nice shots Al. It is unusual that the background did that!

Very beautiful bird.
What you experience in the second one is I think called banding. It may appear at post processing (the use of some filters could be a reason - even simple convert from 16Bit -raw-tiff to 8Bit jpeg) and most of the time when it appears it's almost impossible to get completely rid of it on screen.
There are some tutorials concerning remove banding by adding noise to the image but...until now I never succeeded in complete and satisfying removal.
It seems when printing you want see it.

Marc
