I've been reading about the HDR mode menu settings, but on my camera, this is greyed out. I've tried all modes except the auto modes. I can get backlit HDR in the scene menu, but that's all. What do I need to do to enable this menu?
Regards,
Col.

Dec 02, 2014 05:07 | #2 I'm not familiar with the 70D but are you shooting in raw? Maybe it only works with JPEG. Something to try anyway.

Glad I could help. Deep in the memory banks I think I've seen the same question pop up before.

Maybe it only works with JPEG. Something to try anyway. Don't know about the 70D, but the 5D3 will shoot HDR with the camera in raw mode. The resulting in-camera HDR image is a JPEG, but the shot(s) can be taken in raw mode. And if you have it set to save the HDR source images you get them as raw files.

Dec 05, 2014 21:45 | #9 My 70D definitely does not do HDR in RAW mode, only in JPG. I find it annoying having to switch to JPG, then (in a different menu) activate HDR, the undo both changes later. The camera should behave like the 5D3, as mentioned in another post in this thread. Apparently, it will save the RAW images as well as generating a JPG with HDR. Earth to Canon: people who understand/need HDR would sooner shoot their mothers than shoot jpg! People who understand/need HDR would rather take 3 separate RAW shots and do the work manually in Photomatix, Photoshop etc, tweaking to their pleasure and tastes, rather than rely on generic in-camera HDR, regardless of JPEG or RAW! In my opinion Canon got it right here. The vast majority of people who will use HDR in-camera are just taking snapshots, for which JPEG is more than enough. I find it annoying having to switch to JPG, then (in a different menu) activate HDR, the undo both changes later. A little help would be to set up your custom menu in the 70D and include both the switching to JPEG and toggling HDR in it. Still a 2 step action but less menus to go through. Dennis

Hmm, can I do it in 2 steps using the q button? 2 steps, but more button presses. The easiest thing for cannon to have done was to have put a HDR mode on the dial that switched it to JPEG. Or put raw compatibility in the HDR mode. Canon EOS 70D, Canon EOS 600D, EF-S 18-55 ii, EF 55-200 USM ii, EF-S 75-300 iii, Tamron 28-80, Sigma 70-210.
