I've spent many hours in the recent weeks staking out a favorite Eagle bathing pond near my home. They prefer very late afternoon/dusk which makes light challenging. There are trees to the west so the light gets dim even before sunset. On this day the sun had already set and I was just about to pack up when an Eagle came soaring in. I had my camera and lens on the ground pod so I carefully started my crawl toward the bird. Mighty wet and muddy but didn't notice much from the adrenalin. This was my first ground encounter with an Eagle so I'm thrilled to have what I managed to get. Shame the bird didn't show about and hour earlier, the additional light would have allowed me shutter speeds to do this right. I don't like to go higher than ISO 500 so my shutter speeds were around 1/50th to 1/80th - not a great place to be at 700mm, action or not.

It certainly pays to do your homework Steve. Hoping you get one in the light you're after but these images are outstanding.

What great shots, Steve. I love the somewhat goofy and almost embarrassed looks they offer when looking up. Ya done good, bud!
