Thanks everybody for comments and suggestions - I've been on Christmas shopping duty today so have not really had chance to try them all out.

However, I did watch this series of tutorials on DPP yesterday so am feeling slightly happier about things. http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …rials/dpp_tutorials.shtml (external link)

Before I left for the shops I shot a few frames of this Woodpigeon through a double-glazed window, downloaded the folder onto my PC, opened the folder in DPP and made slight adjustments to the files (recipes helped speed thing up), converted the files to TIFF and finished off in PE 10. I think this gives me a work round my early problem. I will try the 16 bit driver though as I miss using Explorer, etc.

I am happy with the detail and focus on this shot - focused using the back button focus method. I have not found a simple method to check what AF case is being used - am I missing the obvious?

Pretty good noise considering the ISO 2500.

Regarding your pigeon, where did the AF point land? If not toward the end of the wing/ tail, you are having some front focus? If toward the head, try some plis Mfa.

Seems the 7DII will get along with Macro well.

Anybody using a Sigma lens with the 7D2? If so how's it working? I ask because my Sigma 150-500 still has focusing issues.

Spent some time with the Dot-Tune method of AF Micro adjustment this morning. Here is an image from this afternoon imported into LR5 then exported to .jpg with no adjustments. The crop is about 100% from LR with no adjustments. This is with the 70-200 F4 non-IS, AI Servo on Case 2 with default settings & 9 focus points. Yes, the little guy was moving. He spent more time under water than above.

This was my second trip out since the camera body arrived Friday. The first few shots were pretty soft. AFMA made a big difference, enough that I will not be returning the camera tomorrow as originally planned so I can get some more time with it. Also note that B&H has extended their return window for the holidays. For purchases made between November 1, 2014 and January 1, 2015, the return policy will be until February 1, 2015.

Nice shots. Congrats on the successful AFMA. AFMA seems to be very important with this camera.

Pretty much same time of day and same subject. The first image was camera right out of the box on Friday. Second image is today after Dot-tune method of AFMA. No adjustments made in LR other then import/export.

One more - full size and then cropped in, I was surprised it nailed the fire so well given the poor light.
