Strange that it's not popular; it's a super sharp lens (from what I've gathered from reviews), has IS, and is now very affordable. I am tempted.

Awesome light and capture!

Thanks, David. It's a great lens - I use it almost exclusively on the 6D for mountain shots.

Well I have this lens coming to me after quite the shakeup in my lens lineup. Selling my 17-55, sold my 30mm sigma, bought the 35mm ART sigma, returned the 35mm ART sigma, now I have the 24-70F4 and 35mm F2 IS on their way along with a 5D Mark III.

Out of curiosity... why did you return the 35 art?

I found the focus at infinity (or near "infinity"...anything beyond 15-20) feet was unreliable. Near focus was pretty much always dead on. However, at least for me...a lens I have to question whether it will focus right or not is worth almost nothing to me. I find myself taking more test shots with them rather than enjoying my shooting.

Plus when I read more and more about the 35 F2 I realized it might be more for me anyway. The sigma is more of a F1.6 lens in reality so I lose less than stop of light but gain 3 stops of IS. The sigma is a little sharper at F2 but for normal size prints I doubt anyone would notice. Beyond that point they are a tie.

Add to that that I liked the idea of semi-downsizing my main lenses. The 17-55 is pretty large especially with the hood. The 24-70 F4 is pretty tiny. The 35 F2 IS is pretty small especially compared to the sigma. Smaller lenses means I can either bring a smaller bag or I can bring more in my kit.

How do you like your 35 F2 IS?

I just received it couple days ago... only took couple of test shots when arrived to verify not defective ;-)a
Babysitting my 3 month old Granddaughter tomorrow, so I will be able try it out for real then...

I've had my eye on the Sigma forever and have constantly talked myself out of buying the 35 f2 IS... But, I finally found a good deal here for one and decided to just give it try. Love the IS... pretty sure I can live without the Sigma now... I am glad I never pulled the trigger on it. My inner voice always said "don't do it!!!"... The only hurdle for me was the inconsistencies in focus that you mentioned. Just so many different focus issues for different copies on different bodies, etc.. etc.. I am anal enough as it is, the last thing I need is to be suspicious of my lenses focusing system

I have also had my eye on the 24-70 f4... but I just cannot find a reason to replace my 24-105 with it

Alright well I got my lens...here's my thoughts

1. The build quality is for the most part great...love the focus ring feel...the body feels so solid. My only complaint is that the zoom ring is quite stiff for an L lens.

2. Resolution at regular distances appears pretty good. Nothing I can find to complain about on the 7D I currently have (5d is present).

3. Macro mode is fun...even with owning a true macro lens its nice to have options

Now....the problem...

Resolutions is TERRIBLE the closer I get to MFD. Photozone commented on this but I thought he was referring actually the macro mode...in reality at 70mm the resolution is just bad near MFD. I don't know why...because switching to macro mode fixes this resolution issue. It's almost as if they couldn't make up their mind and saw that if they added this...it fixed the issue but had no good way to automate it.

http://www.photozone.de …f/798-canon2470f4?start=1 (external link)

So...what to do...what to do. I might have to see exactly where the resolution takes a nose dive in terms of focusing distance...I've never seen this before. If people here could try this out I'd appreciate it just to make sure its not a sample variation issue. I know a couple pages back I saw one member comment on this behavior but I'm still curious if its normal for this lens.

So...in summary:

Love the lens size, weight, build...resolution seems pretty good...would love 2.8 but that's not this lens ;). Only downfall I see is this MFD issue. I might have to try out the 2.8 and see if I like it better...
