Thanks everyone for the comments. As I went through this past weekend shots I still find myself cropping more than I would like to get peak action but that is sometimes life with the gear and distance that we wind up with at times. And I find I need to work on following the action better as they get in close, I find myself using the 300mm even close in, 10 yardline and closer. The action gets on top of you real quick but when you get it right there are some amazing images.

Pat,
I like the second one but why are you shooting at 1/400 ss and ISO 1250. You should bump up both and you would have a much better picture. I would also crop this portrait style.

Douglas made it to the State Championship game. They are 13-0. They won 43-0. The visiting team ran into a buzz saw that just would not stop spinning. The images pretty much tells the story of the game. I even missed some of the TDs and they had a couple called back because of penalties.

The horizons are off a bit on a couple that I thought I straightened, oh well...

When shooting night games, what is the lowest ISO you can shoot at without compromising the picture quality?

depends on how much you crop ss and camera low light strength not to mention lights and the recycle ones too and different stadiums
I dont think anyone can tell anyone in concrete what to use
maybe a starting point
Ive shot in 20 different stadiums this year from 4 to 11 pm
some sun half sun sunset and no sun just lights
I have at least 15 presets in LR5 for PP
and some are the same stadium with different iso's and shutter speeds
Id say start at 2.8 1/1000 and see what the ISO does
also JH HS College and Pro are different
the older they get the faster the game
I dont like shooting less than 1/640 but I have
I like to be at least 1/800 3200 or less f4 or less
I can get that most of the time
couldnt with a 40d or a 1d2 (which is a great camera in daylight IMHO)
my 70d handles 3200 fairly well
I have gone to 5000 but dont like to
Fill the frame so you dont crop much
reach helps that

the above post and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee

I'm still working to figure out this new update, so bear with me if I mess something up.

Here are some photos from the Aledo vs. Canyon Randall football (external link) game out in Snyder, TX.

There are only two more weeks of high school football remaining this season. It should be fun to see how they will play out.
