These are some of the best I've seen. They really capture the action and emotion. Great shots.

Great series. Love the focus, colors and angles. They all look very sharp but some of them could have less NR I guess :)

So if you were forced to only use the 400 or the 200-400 for everything which one would you ditch?

Indoors, I find the 400/2.8's AF to be a touch more precise, but that's probably due to the shallow shallower depth of field. The image quality of the 200-400 seems to degrade slightly indoors. Still, the 200-400 is an amazing lens... I look forward to trying it out for basketball season. They light up the arena a bit more for basketball so that should help.

As far as outdoors, I will say that the 200-400 is THE lens to have for most sports. Sharpness is incredible at all ranges, even with the built in teleconverter activated. It blows Nikon's equivalent out of the water in terms of image quality. I'll still occasionally reach for the 400/2.8 just for the DOF, plus I seem to shoot better with prime lenses.

It would be tough but I would have to ditch the 400 as long as I had a 1DX. The 200-400 is just too versatile.

Those are beyond incredible. I have shot volleyball and NEVER achieved such incredible images. I am not just talking about the clarity of the images but also the timing and composition. VERY nice work!

Andrew - I just checked out your website. You've got some seriously killer shots! I love to shoot sports as well, so it's always nice to see something new and inspiring. Keep it up! :D

I also shoot with a 1d mark iii in horrible lighting every time I shoot basketball. I shoot a lot in high school gyms and I was shooting at SS of 200 at Iso 2000 and was getting same results are you are. Blurry, of out of focus. I think the best thing to do is shoot at Iso 3200 (6400 is out of control noisy) 2.8 at SS of 500-640 M mode. For me Im still about -1.5/-2 under. noise reduction in LR sharpen them and call it a day.

These are amazingly detailed.
It looks like you had control of the lights.

Here at the University of Arizona, the main photog has a radio popper and sets the flashes off all over the court. Its awesome.
These look so good its like you had that ability. Even though I'm pretty sure you didnt.
Congrats!

oh and GO VOLS!!
