I am asking this question on this forum because I only use this equipment for bird photography . I have a 7D and 100-400L lens, both Mk1s. I find that with some trade in I can afford either the 7D Mk2 or the 100-400L Mk2 but not both. I think that I will get a better upgrade in IQ and focus acquisition by opting for the new camera body over the new lens, does anybody have any views on this, bearing in mind that I am only using this body/lens combo for bird/wildlife photography?
You get minor improvements from the lens upgrade (as it's just features and minor optical improvements).
You get minor improvements in AF/IQ/ISO in the 7D2.
What do you need more for what you do?
The 7D2 will be the overall bigger upgrade, out of two minor upgrades, in this situation. Solely from an ISO performance standpoint and stronger AF system.
Otherwise, a different lens all together could be an option. The 400 F5.6L prime is faster, sharper. If you're always living at 400mm, swapping to that would be a nice change of pace at no real cost difference, straight trade.
