Nothing outstanding but it was my first red-tailed. Would have been nice if he'd given me 20 more feet before bolting and def. testing the limits of the Tam 150-600. Regardless I'm happy with my first hawk-

I wish we had more birds up here this time of year. Jan 2 I'll be here and I arranged for the free 2 ½ hour tour. Looking forward to it.

Nice pic MM, hawks are high on my wish list too.

Hope you don't mind me mentioning it, but it looks like your lens may be forward focusing a little from that pic, have you done any MFA to it?

Cheers
Gus

Those are tough to shoot. Don't like being around people. Nice capture.

Ancientone thanks, awesome ant! Digital Paradise thanks too!
Ancientone, no MFA yet but will soon. I use FoCal but am limited to 300mm with my version; need to upgrade to FoCal pro to get beyond 300mm in that program. I'm currently waiting on a 400mm DO and when it gets here that will motivate me to upgrade FoCal.

Thanks MM, the Ant was taken with the 100 2.8L Macro lens with a 12mm extension tube AND the 1.4III extender, I needed a modified 12mm extension tube to be able to mount the 1.4 to the 100mm lens, it works surprisingly well and still auto focuses :-)

You can try the Dot Tune method for now and it's free and pretty quick to do, see if that makes any difference.

I was sooooo close to committing to the 400DOII, but opted to get the 7DII and a 100-400II instead. So far I am loving the 7DII and can't wait to get my hands on the 100-400II ... but am still keenly interested in how the 400DOII turns out so will watch your posts closely for your thoughts and opinions.

Cheers
Gus

Ancientone, I think the 100-400 will prove much more usefull/versatile but I've got two friends who shoot the first gen 100-400 and everytime I watch them they're fully zoomed out.....which is my feeble way of justifying the prime. So I eagerly await your 100-400 II results :)

This is one of the major factors in me not buying a 100-400 and going with the Tamron. I borrowed a friend's 100-400 and found that I was almost always at 400, plus I didn't like the lack of contrast compared to the 70-300L. I decided I would give the Tamron a try and knew I could sell it or trade it for the 400 f5.6 prime if I was dissatisfied.
I look forward to seeing real world examples from the 100-400L II and the Sigma 150-600 sport.

I use my 100-400 at 400 most of the time. But it is nice to be able to shoot at shorter focal lengths without changing the lens or having to "settle" for a portrait. The portrait works just great though.

Maybe the hawk is the new duck. ;-)a The hawk I saw yesterday came back this morning, and luckily was perched much closer today. I'm not good at bird identification and am not sure if this is a red tailed or red shouldered hawk, although I'm tending toward red tailed.
