Nothing outstanding but it was my first red-tailed. Would have been nice if he'd given me 20 more feet before bolting and def. testing the limits of the Tam 150-600. Regardless I'm happy with my first hawk-

Thanks for the ID. I need to study more.

Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks are very tough to tell the difference. Generally in the juveniles the Cooper's has narrow stripes and the Sharp-shinned has thicker ones. Cooper's have a more fierce look to the face also.

Red-tailed Hawks have a dark, light dark pattern from the head to the belly and Red-shouldered Hawks have sort of a chevron shaped spot on the breast and belly in juveniles.

Stsva color me jealous! That is a wonderful hawk.
I think we're both glad 2n10 is here to help the ID.
It's a shame how little I truly know about birds....the more I learn the more impressed I am-it's a rough world out there.
My birding goal is an owl, any owl here at home. I got them (4 different species) when I was in Africa but that's almost like cheating since they come out in the daytime.

I went out in search of ducks with my new 100-400 MKII, but alas the marsh was empty. I ended up taking of a couple of landscapes instead.

Maybe the hawk is the new duck. The hawk I saw yesterday came back this morning, and luckily was perched much closer today. I'm not good at bird identification and am not sure if this is a red tailed or red shouldered hawk, although I'm tending toward red tailed.

Thanks! Nothing special on the setup. I had it on AE wide open at 5.6. I was hoping to catch some ducks flying around, so I had the ISO at 640, trying to keep it as low as possible while keeping the shutter speed up. I was pretty happy with how it turned out.
