Well you sure are persistent. It does look better. A better exposure to start would have helped as well I think.

The only reason I was not too thrilled at all with the first shot was because everybody was doing high fives. When I look at images I compare them to guys like Art Morris, Liquidstone and many others at that level which includes members here. I was a member of a bird site that Art Morris frequented that also has many other categories including non-winged wildlife. That shot in the original post would have not stood a chance to get on the front page.

Maybe I should not be be doing this here but there nothing wrong with benchmarks I don't think. How do you improve without them? If I owned a $12,000 lens I would want to be hitting that level of shot.

I just came across another thread at FM. A 1DX owner shot with his 7D2 with basically the same settings he uses on his 1DX. He had 8 keepers out of 400 shots. Is this person legit or trolling? Is there a problem or is there just a drop in peoples skill levels? I'm going on a road trip soon and I'm deciding whether to leave to the 7D2 at home. I really want to take it but I have to trust it. Finally some sun this week so I'll see. I have not read the whole post at FM yet.

Hey boss, that person is me. It's definately not a skill problem nor am I trolling. I can post examples of both if you desire.

I have sent the first one back to Adorama and will receive a second one tomorrow. It will be set up just like my 1Dx for all common settings, just as the first one was. We'll then see what happens.

Can't be any worse. Several users on FM suggested I get another one as they had to return the first and the second was much, much better. I did use Helen Oster to try and ensure that I get one out of a different shipment and batch.

If this one doesn't work, I'm done.

Hang in there buddy...I went through 3 exchanges and finally got one that (so far...) appears to be a keeper.

I did not think so, I doubted it was a skill issue and I'm really glad you are on this thread. Good luck and keep us posted.

These otter images look fine to me. But it depends where the focus was intended I guess.
They look sharp, where it's focused, but maybe not razor sharp. Although the lighting seems dull/dim, so you'll lose some sharpness of course.

Don confirmed the focus was on mother's nose. Obvious to his best guess of actual Af point size.

Well as a quick update, my second copy from Adorama also turned out to be front and back focusing (randomly), giving me less than 25% keeper rate. Tried with Tammy 150-600, Canon 24-105, Canon 70-200 f/4 IS as well as Canon 400 f/5.6; nearly same results with all lenses although the Canon 24-105 and 70-200 were a little better. AFMA did not help (except with the Canon 50 1.4)

I really wanted to love this camera, I felt guilty asking for a third copy of the 7DMK2 and tired of the thought of trying it all over again. I think I am done with Canon semi-pro APS-C unless they come out with a camera that does not have the focus issues I've faced with the 70D and the 7DMK2. I wanted the latter for birding and sports and it would have been a great companion to the 5DMK3 but it wasn't meant to be, at least for now.

The same lenses work flawlessly on the 5DMK3.

Canon 5D Mark III, EF 50 F/1.4, EF 17-40 F/4 L, EF 24-105 F/4 IS L, EF 70-200 F/4 IS L, EF 400 F/5.6 L, Tamron 150-600, Canon Speedlite 430EX
