A few of the many photos I've taken in Cozumel

All shot with a Canon G9 in the Canon housing using 2 old Sea & Sea strobes (triggered via fibre optic cables which see the built in flash fire) which only fire at full power. Processed from RAW in Photoshop using Adobe Camera RAW.

Very cool shots! The only real underwater shots I've done have been with a go-pro hero 3+ and I found the color to be a little tricky

Thanks. By shooting in RAW (that was a deciding factor when upgrading cameras back in 09) it's rather easy to do colour corrections to underwater shots. I'll be adding more underwater stuff over the next while and in some it's hard to think they were shot underwater. Here's one example that comes to mind instantly.

Usually stay at Hotel Cozumel and dive with Dive Paradise. The Seahorses are my favorite to photograph. 6 MP Sea Life camera. Not very good.

Do you guys find it difficult to do underwater photography in Cozumel? All the dives I've done there have been drift dives and the currents were pretty strong. If I had my underwater photographer gear at the time I could have also gotten some nice French Angel shots since a couple of the swam next to me for awhile while checking me out but doing any corals or macro shot would have been extremely hard.

I stay at Hotel Coz too most trips & have dove with Dive Paradise a few times (I know most of the staff that work there) but I've made a lot of friends over the years & alternate through 7 or 8 different ops just to keep friendships up to date.

As for the current & photos yes it can be tough at times which is why I stuck to a P & S vs a DSLR rig. Much easier to manage when the current is wild. As much as I'd like to put more effort into my underwater photography I shoot what I can & enjoy the dive. That said because I've spent a lot of time with the DM's I use they give me lots of latitude to do my thing rather than having to stay close to the group. They know that if I'm not in sight I know how to find them before it's time to surface or that I will on my own.

Oh yeah I forgot about how you're supposed to stick together on those dive tours in place like that(I think it's been 10 yr or so since I dove Cozumel).

I'm sure the compacts are easier all around but big DSRL setups are easy to manage once bellow the surface, the extra drag would make fitting a current for a shot a bit harder of course. Transport to dive location, carrying the extra weight for shore divers and surface swims(I always swim on my back now, used snorkel at times) can be a real pain. I'm going to switch to Z-240 or YS-D1(or what ever that might come out that's better before I buy) to cut down on weight.

Everyone always enjoys being my dive buddy because I'm good at finding the critters and all they have to do wait till they notice the strobes fire and swim over and take a look in the area I had the camera pointed. They usually make comments like I never realized how much stuff I've just been swimming by.

Never had any problems using my P&S in Coz or anywhere. If the currents too fast I shoot my wife or friends and enjoy the dive. The DM's at Dive Paradise always give me latitude as well because I have dived with them enough and usually let them know when the wife and I go off on our own a bit.

Very nice. Looks like you had pretty good vis for that Eagle Ray shot. Do you dive Coz regularly?

I'm headed there the last week of January, staying at Scuba Club next to Hotel Coz. I generally always go wide angle on the boat dives as Coz serves up some great reefscapes. When shore diving at Scuba Club is when I switch to macro. You can still do WA in ripping currents but macro is tough but there are plenty of cool things to shoot on the shore dives.

I'm heading back Jan 28 for 2 weeks too. We try to go just about every year around the beginning of Feb to split winter in half. Hotel Cozumel is our usual choice because we know so many other guests who come for that time of year and it's good value.

What is that thing in the first picture? It looks fake almost.
