7d mark ii vs 1d IV

I'm looking to upgrade sooner or later but I cant wrap my head around which camera would better suite me.
I shoot action, sports, and anything related-- also looking to getting into portrait work.

I already have the 7D classic. I'm familiar with the platform already but I'm not entirely impressed with it-I seek something more. I love the AF, it's tack sharp, but the IQ seems to lack a little. This thinking pointed me in the direction of the 1d series. I LOVE the 1d cameras. The IQ is phenomenal. I've used the 1Dc up to the III and every one of them impressed me along the way. I have yet to get my hands on the IV, but I sure do have an itch.

The pitfall for me here is that if I got the 7dii, I could get it brand new, never touched but for (IMO) lower IQ than if I got the 1D IV. The IV however, has been discontinued, came out almost 5 years ago, and when buying used, you just don't really know what you're getting into until you take it out and test it for yourself.

If it were up to you guys, which path would you walk down?

I just sold my 7D and have had the 1D MK4 for a year now. I am buying the 7D MK II next week, the 1.6 crop for wildlife photography being the main reason but I will still keep my 1D

Noise levels will be better on the 1D MK 4, and its a great camera, but as you say second hand now is your only option. One with a low shutter count might be the way to go? I see you have a prime lens 300 f2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8, so the 7D MK 2 would be the one I would go for ...prices will drop in January ..

The high-ISO noise may be slightly better with the 1DIV, but it won't be amazingly different, and the 7DII noise cleans up well.

Bought a 7D2, wasn't enamored with the image quality. Returned it and bought a 1D4 with 18k clicks in mint condition, very satisfied.

hope the mk4 serves you well.....its a great camera

Easy decision for me. 1D IV.

all the hype about the 7dmk2 being a cropped 1dx with a better af hasn't really in the world borne out. reality is a 1dmk4 is a good compromise between crop and full frame with a lovely clean file, and the 1dx still rules the roost in terms of iq.

ive borrowed a 7dmk2 and used it for a soccer match, I will post some images here soon comparing to a 1dmk4......but, I would recommend a good 1dmk4 anyday

I have been struggling with this decision for weeks as well, I found a used 1d4 for around $1650. It has a lot of clicks on the shutter but cosmetically clean, no dings, etc. so I know it was well cared for. Sample images from this camera have been some that I've drooled over for a couple of years as the seller would post bird and wildlife shots on FM.
I talked to one of the most talented, lucrative and busy pro photographers in my area about what to do and he told me he still shoots primarily with a 1dII and after seeing his work blown up to poster size, banner size all over my community I quit worrying about the 16 vs 20 megapixels.
I will have camera in hand on Monday or Tuesday and can't be more excited.
The pics from the 7dII just haven't consistently had that "wow" factor for me that the pics from the 1d4 have.

I do not own a 7d2 or a 1d4. I have borrowed a 1d4. I belong to a camera club. 3 members own the 1d4 and 2 members own the 7d2. There is no doubt about it that the images from the 1d4 are just so much better. I own the 7d mk1 and love this camera but hope to upgrade it later on in the new year. I have already made my decision what to upgrade my crop camera too. I hope to buy a 1d4 with less than 50k actuations for less than the price of the new 7d2. The 1d4 just feels a professional camera where as the 7d2 fells like a semi pro camera.

I've seen some impressive photographs taken with the 1D IV here on POTN. I have no doubt it is a fine camera.

I've already stated, when I bought my 7D2, the prices for a 1D IV were around $3500 and really out of my price range. In addition, many (or even most) of the wildlife photographs I've admired so much were shot with the 1D IV and one of the 500mm f/4 lenses... or something longer. When you add in even a used 500 Version 1, it gets expensive.... too much for me at the moment.

I'll end up being satisfied with the 7D2 and the new 100-400 ii, I think. Will it be as good as the 1D IV and 500L.... I doubt it. But I am already seeing improvements with my own photographs with the 7D2 and the 400 f/5.6 so I think I'll be happy.

I hope this isn't coming across as a "I'll justify my purchase in the face of reality." I know my decision was a compromise.... but a compromise based on my gear budget.

Over the next year, I hope we see many happy 1DX "and" 7D2 owners who are getting great results with their new gear.


Ooops... I meant "1DIV" owners.. as they have come down in price and many here are buying them.

i sure don't take it that way Kim, I based my purchase first on price, then on image quality.
I almost had the 7dII in my cart a few times before I found a great deal on the 1d4.
I have seen some amazing shots with lower priced lenses on both of these cameras but it does appear that the 7dII takes some extra work or higher level of skill than I presently possess!
I have the Tamron 150-600 and if I cannot get good results with it on the 1d4 then I will consider a swap for the 400 f5.6 like you have or the new 100-400II.
I always loved your pictures when we frequented the 70-300L sample thread, I'm sure I'm going to love your shots with the new combo!

What people have to realize is that most people shooting a 1d4 also have a 500 or 600 f4.

Most people shooting a 7d2 or similar are shooting on a budget and have less expensive glass.

So making a body purchase based on other peoples sample shots with a lens you'll not own yourself is a mistake.

I love the 1d4 and am considering getting one, but my friend Andy who has shot with his trusty 1d4 for years and now has a 7d2 has put the 1d4 in the closet and not touched it since he got the 7d2.

The 7d or 7d2 on a 500 f4 is amazing although I assume the 1d4 does a little better in low light than the 7d1 but about the same as the 7d2.

Test coming when Andy gets back in town.

And for that post really, i have 1DX and very happy with it, but it is only 1 body, if i want to pair it with another body but not 1DX so what will be my choice? and mostly i was thinking about 1D4 but since i can get it only as used so i skipped it and i keep looking at this new one 7D2 as a backup.

My lenses are:

For now: EF 300 2.8 IS mk1, 70-200 2.8 IS mkII, 100-400 mk1
For future if i save: maybe 500 mkII or 600 mkII, 100-400 mkII if i sell my mk1, 150-600 if i didn't buy 100-400 mkII

I also feel people keep comparing non pro body such as 7D and 7D2 with not super tele against 1 series top line with super tele, so what if i have that advanced non pro body with one of those super teles, how will the equation be?

Which one will you choose, 1DX + 600II [+ 1.4III or without] or 7D2 + 500II without TC?

There is no doubt 7D mk II wins,
Both 7D mk II and 1D IV wasn't a FF sensor,
Image quality depends on what lens do you use,
I think 7D mk II wins over all aspect against 1D IV
The only one FF body that stole my heart is 1D X , beside that i choose 7D 'species'
More durable, mo shutter actuation, high fps even compared with 5D3
New technology, less problem, sharp or not depend on who use it,
You cannot get a sharp image even with 1DX if you don't understand how to use it
