I would guess that the batter caught a sliver of it and the ball was deflected from its path - enough time for a reflexive blink but not enough time to move the mitt.

Very nice, as an x-catcher I would say that it was a deflection and and either hit the catchers mask that caused the blink. Even with the mask it still hurts.
