The best answers can only be given when we know what you're thinking about. Monopods can be used in many ways even though the "classic" use is standing behind a vertical monopod. Skip Douglas

Dec 21, 2014 03:41 | #4 Speaking personally here, for that weight I wouldn't bother. Aircraft flybys I'm assuming are quite quick, I've always struggled to keep panning smooth on a monopod for that sort of thing. 5D3, 7D2, 1D3, 40D, 14 f2.8 Samyang, 17-40 L, 28-80 L, 70-200 2.8ii L, 200 2.8ii L, 200-400 L, 1.4 ii,

I have to agree with nellyle here, I have never used one for Aircraft but I did try one for motor racing using a 7D and a 100/400( which weighs about the same as your set up) Chris

Since I see by your gear list your 70-200 is the f/4 (no tripod mounting ring, right?), that goes double. Without the tripod mount for the lens, you'll be mounting the monopod to your camera body; offhand, the only monopod head that would let you have pitch (up and down) control of your lens mounted that way would be the RRS MH-02 Jon

For aircraft, you're going to be pointing your camera up. If it's not tall enough, you'll be forced to stoop down to look through the viewfinder. Moose

I too was at the Weston Air Display this year on both days. I took my Gitzo monopod on the Saturday, found it restricting and on the Sunday didn't take it at all. However, the Weston beach motocross race and Red Bull event, I could not do without it.

I could've kicked myself for not bringing a stool/chair... but my legs were to tired. Moose

Following aircraft you'll need to pan around and that means either you, or the lens, will be swinging around too. If you're sitting down, you'll have to swing the lens and a monopod would just get in the way. I think they were talking about sitting down between acts. Jon
