My wife and I are heading down the last week of December.

#1 on our list is Ding Darling NWR.

We also thought about Merritt NWR.

Looking for advice for any other must visit areas.

If you visit Merritt Island, you might also try Viera Wetlands.

Where are you staying?
There is quite a drive between MRW and Ding Darling 4 plus hours on a good day.
Merritt Island is a great place to go lots of side roads to explore and manatee viewing areas also and more birds than you can take pics of.
There is a wildlife area around Christmas Florida whose name escapes me at the moment but is closer to Merritt Island bout 30 minutes west.

Merritt Island is great, so is Ding Darling IMO.

Other FL hotspots would include
- Circle B Bar Reserve near Lakeland
- Loxahatchee, Green Cay, and Wakodahatchee near Delray Beach
- Anhinga Trail and Shark Valley near Homestead
- maybe Flamingo
- Little Estero near Ft Myers
- Venice Rookery at Venice
- Tavernier Wild Bird Center in the Keys

Don't try to do them all in one day! :-) There is a lot of space between these locations.

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

It's a long term road trip, plan on being down there about a week. We don't really have any set location as far as where we'll be staying. Just plan on getting a hotel near whichever spots we end up hitting. Going down there to explore. Ding Darling is about as far south as we'd want to go.

I am in the process of planning a week long trip to Florida, too.

So, how was the trip? Where did you end of going and staying.

Thanks...Al
