No idea what this is, just know it was on the highway just south of Monterey in 2012.

Looks like some variety of mid '50s Ford Station Wagon.

I would say it is a 1956 judging by the tail lights. Beyond that, I'm going to have to do a little research.

Yes, it's a Country Squire. Only picture just like it said that model of car was 1955-1956. Pictures of other 1955 Ford's don't have tail lights on wagons like that, but 1956's do. So its year is one of those two. In my opinion most likely a 1956, but I could be wrong. I have seen Woody Wagons, but not many. Most of those were older, too.

Here is a link to a closed auction for one. Click where it says slideshow to see a larger view. Classic Car Auctions. (external link) You can see how similar the car that was auctioned is to this one. Just wish they had a rear view of the automobile. In the mid to late 1950's and early 1960's the tail fins were the easiest way to tell what year a car was built by most American car manufacturers.

No, your shot is perfect. Was wishing the auction had a shot from the same angle as yours.

One key to identifying this old Ford is to note the shape of the front turn signals. The '55 had round signal lights and the '56 had a kind of flat/rectangular(ish) signal light. This wagon is a '56.
