Is the Canon 135mm f2.0 just as sharp as the 100mm 2.8 macro for shooting flowers? I don't need magnification greater than 1:1 life size. Which is better and why? if the 135mm f2.0 is just as sharp, I might as well buy it instead to multipurpose as a portrait Len.

The 135L is plenty sharp but doesn't allow you 1: . It focuses reasonably close but its not a macro lens by any means

If you dont' need 1:1 and your not concerned with getting close up on the flowers finer details stamen, pollen etc... then the 135mm f2.0 should work fine for larger flowers. If you want photos of smaller wild flowers that are around the size of nickle for example those are where a macro lens would make a big difference.
