I want to use my s95 as a "gopro" style camera. Few questions please:

  1. How much run time will the stock battery offer when recording at 720p?
  2. Is there a higher capacity battery available for the s95?
  3. What is the maximum GB size of SD card the s95 will accept?
  4. What speed/class SD card do I really need for video recording? Looking for most bang for my buck.
  5. Owner's manual says video clips are limited to 29 min 59 sec at default settings. What does "default settings" mean? I need to know the max clip length when running at 720p. (If it's 5 or 10 minutes, then I can't use this as a gopro style camera).
  6. Any other info is greatly appreciated. Thanks much!

  1. No idea, but I wouldn't expect to get more than one 1/2 hr. segment complete on a single battery. Then again, your shooting conditions (time, temp., light levels, etc.) will all make a difference.
  2. Maybe after-market, but I doubt it'll give you a full hour reliably.
  3. Any SD-sized card through SDXC (which class starts at 64 GB and goes up from there)
  4. Canon says at least Class 4; I'd say give that some room, and go for Class 6 or better.
  5. Default is the 24 fps 720p setting. Max. clip will be 29+ min. OR 4 GB, whichever comes first - high ISO or very detail-heavy and rapidly-changing scenes will fill the card faster.

1. I used my S95 to shoot wedding video (the "planner" forgot about a videographer). IIRC I was able to shoot around 2 hours worth of video with 2 batteries. So I'd guess 60-90 minutes per battery depending on resolution and conditions.
2. None that I know of.
3. I have a Samsung 32GB class 10 card in my S95, works just fine.
4. Class 10 cards aren't that much more money than class 4 or 6. I prefer Sandisk for my SLRs, they work fine in my S95 too.
