It was overcast today, but these guys were hanging around the bird feeder so I got a few shots.

Sounds good 'cepting the risky transit from here over 12,000 miles to western Oz :(
Yet I did order and received a sea kayak from Mirage Kayaks in New South Wales Australia. the kayak did the
12,000+ mile transit with nary a scratch or ding; yet a kayak ordered from New Jersey here in the states-barely
9 hours away arrived with multiple fractures. Go figure.

I finally had a chance last night to give the AF system a bit of a workout at the Speedway, never tried to photograph speedway bike before. Those guys are nuts. Hopefully post a couple of those in the next few days, I think I got a couple of ok shots for a first go but learned lots for next time. My 100-400 II has a battle scar - slight paint chip from flying gravel. Sniff.

Anyway, was playing around this evening and I think this might've been my first shot on the 7DII with my macro lens, not that it really needed a macro lens:

IMAGE LINK: https://flic.kr/p/pJ1V4x (external link) Last coffee of a lazy summers day (external link) by TerminalCityNZ (external link), on Flickr

I learned a couple of things out of this shot - reflections from metal are tricky to eliminate especially when you're using ambient light from window sources that reflects all around the room (white walls), and the next time I do a shot like this I need to make sure I don't have my own reflection in the handle of the cup, along with the tripod and diffuser I was holding.

Also, things that appear clean to the naked eye might not appear clean to the 100L Macro!

My shots of distant BIF were a bit hit and miss so I did some more MFA this time by taking series of images across the MFA range. I have now increased the MFA to +15 on the 300/1.4x and to +11 on the bare 300. So far so good.

I am now using DPP4 for all my image sorting, renaming and RAW manipulation and then using ctrl-B (batch processing) to open the image directly in PE10. This works for single files or a batch of files.

The one thing I cannot get to work is opening the new CR2 files in Windows Explorer or Photo Viewer. I have downloaded the latest Microsoft Codec pack and any Canon files that I can find but to no avail. If Microsoft Explorer tries (and fails) to open a CR2 file my PC tells me that the codec is missing and then directs me to a Canon page where it does not exist - I must be missing something.

Still I am more confident of taking the camera to Thailand for 3 weeks.

Ain't that the truth. I found this when I was selling some gear and took photos with the 100 macro (haha!)
