Planning on picking up an 85 mm myself.

Once Canon release an 85mm that's just like the 35 IS, I'll definitely be getting myself one as well!

Tried a 365 before, but quit before long :). Let's try a 52 instead then :)

Week 1

We were celebrating my wife's 2nd 20th Birthday. We had a fabulous lunch at the Plough Inn in Rede, near Bury St Edmunds in England. The timing was perfect as this was the last day they had their Christmas decor up. They sure made for great bokeh balls. However, with the 85L, I could not get enough field of view to capture the bokeh balls. So this is a 10 shot Brenizer with the 85L at 1.8, which equates to something like a 47mm at 1.0. Hope you like it.

Great shot Josh, love the lighting. The Brenizer method is something I'm still yet to try but the results from it are amazing.

Week 1. I decided to focus on colors and low ambient light but had to change subjects at the last minute. I don't have the right equipment to take self portraits in near darkness.

A few things I learned this week - 1) Wireless remote triggers don't work in near complete darkness, 2) When using a non-gripped L-bracket in portrait mode, you need a special 90 degree USB adapter in order to use wired tethering, 3) Operating a camera and being the subject of your photo is much more challenging than it sounds.

You can use a flashlight to shine on what you are shooting to help give the camera enough light to focus. Then just turn it off

Glad to hear it Pete. And a great first post as well! I love B&W, and when I'm post processing I always check to see which looks better, color or b&w.

Hey you guuuuuyyyys!

Figured I wanted to do a project this year and my first thought was a 365, but the more I thought about it the more I doubted whether I could do it. I think a 52 week one is more reasonable for me, especially for a first try.

I'm not going to be picking a theme throughout... I've decided I'm simply going to try and shoot/edit more and pick my favorite each week. Some weeks I may decide to focus on a specific topic to learn - some I'm already thinking about: off camera flash, Brenizer Method, portraiture.

1-52: Because it was a busy week and I didn't focus on a specific topic this is my favorite (my son and I):

IMAGE: http://bmaps.zenfolio.com/img/s12/v174/p922745086-5.jpg

Just a couple days remained before the Christmas break was over so my wife and I brought the kids up to play in some snow. My oldest son usually cooperates but always wants to goof-off after the more serious/formal (nice smile) shots. This was one of our goofy face shots.

Looking forward to this 52 week journey.

I already had the 35 IS so Wasnt sure wether to get the 40 too but I'm glad I did. Today was the first time trying it out and it's barely bigger than a lens cap and is sharp wide open. Considering it was <£100 I don't mind that it's close to the 35 as it will serve a different purpose. With regards to bags I recently bought a domke fx5a for taking my Sony a7r with lens attached. It's a very small bag! Now my 5d3 with pancake fits inside with some room to spare, it's ideal for times when I want to be less conspicuous with the camera. I'm not a fan of large bags anyway, when I'm taking the full walkabout kit (5D3 with 35 IS, 85 and 135) I fit it all inside a thinktank retrospective 5!

Eddie, what bag do/will you use going up the hills?

Thanks guys. I've really enjoyed doing the Brenizer and once you've done a few they aren't as complicated as people think :).

Hi Annie. I use a lowepro Toploader bag and chest harness so that the camera is accessible without removing my rucksack, I then keep the tripod and filters in/on the main rucksack (just a normal rucksack - berghaus arête 35) for times where I stop and set up on a tripod, otherwise it's just handheld stuff then the camera goes back in the Toploader as I continue upwards

So i ended up deciding that it won't be a totally free 52 project. I was planning to use the most liked shot of the week before but limited myself at the last second.

It'll be a packshots project, or product/object shots project for how i name it. This way even on the last day of the week i can use something at home and post my photo. I love every kind of photography but if i get better at a style one day i guess it'll be this one. Not a very active person climbing mountains to capture a nice scene  The only problem is i've left all my setup in US when leaving there, now i need a DIY lightbox and ligting. First pictures will be with filmsy setups.

It's a shame that the first week will start with a sloppy job though :( I'm at a very critical corner for my career so this week i'll settle with what i have. I was in Almaty/Kazakhstan for the first week of 2015 so wanted it to be a reminder about it, a key holder i bought from there to add to my collection of key holders

Good luck to you all who starts the project, and enjoy ;-)a

Thanks all. I am going to try my best to do an all B&W. But sometimes, may have to throw in just a little color to make the shot a little more appealing. Like this one I took of Cooper. His favorite thing in the world is his bouncy ball. He was getting just a little too rowdy so I put it up for a minute or two to give him time to settle down. Just as soon as I turned my back, I caught him sneaking

1/52 I'm just taking my favorite from the week, nothing more thematic than that.
