If I had to choose it would be the 24-70ii f2.8, for its versatility. Of course there'd be many times when I'd want something wider, longer or faster. I find it kind of hard to leave the house with less than 2 lenses these days ;-)a

I left the house this morn and grabbed the entire bag. I had all of my lenses with me so I parked the car tok a stroll and snapped away. I would walk back to the car to change lenses just due to the fact that it was kind of windy today and didn't want to get any debris in the cam or lens. I shot a variation today of 4 lenses some of the same subject so I will examine them later but I can never find just one to settle down with. I start playing with a diferent lens and find a sweet spot or someone shows or tells me something about one of my others and I stay up in the air as far as they are concerned but I really lean on the 70-200 so much. The tamron 18-270 gives me he reach and is small enough to drop in a jacket/cargo pocket.

For me: Canon 24-105mm lens. It is not my favorite lens (70-200 is special.) It is the lens I would keep if allowed to have only one lens.

My sister using a Canon SL1: Tamron 18-270mm PZD She wants a really good camera that is easy to carry about anywhere. I have been impressed whether outside at long focal lengths or inside wide and using the built-in flash.

I have considered getting a Tamron 18-270mm lens. I haven't just to prove I still have some discipline when buying "toys."

I try to show a lil restraint but to be honest once I get he extra cash I lose it. I have been good now for a few months, I have only picked up accessories but haven't cracked for a new lens YET..lol

35mm prime on full-frame body.

+1...
More specifically, mine is the 35mm f2 IS. The fact that I could handhold it at 1/2 sec semi-consistently is really cool :)
My only tiny niggle is that i wish it had a better distance scale which included f8.

This is going to be a bit boring, but for a walkaround, I really like my SL1 with kit lens.

My favorite lens to use when I'm walking about is the Sigma 300-800mm. But, when you ask about walk-about lenses, if you mean without a tripod, then it would be the Canon 100-400. But when I'm walking about for photography, I do usually have a tripod with me, so the 300-800 would be the more correct answer.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Of the lenses I have right now it would be the 24-105L on the 5DIII. I still have my 7D and the 24-105L stayed on it most of the time. I like the range it gives me, especially indoors shooting my 2 year old granddaughter, and it is a sharp lens. If I had to get rid of all my lenses but one I would keep the 24-105L but that would be a tough choice because I really like my 100-400L too. However, for a walk about lens the 24-105L would be my choice.

24-70 f/2.8 II on my 5D3
24-105 f/4 on my 1D IV
50 f/1.8 on my A6000

I have tried primes a few times and love the images, but with the exception of the 50 1.8 on the A6000, I prefer zooms.

Walk around to me means that I'm not working, and I just bought a new camera for just those times. I'm carrying a Sony a6000 (12 ounces) with a Sony 16-70 f/4 (11 ounces). On a full frame however, I'd be carrying the same length (24-105).

1D4, 6D, 7D2, Sony a6000 with Sony16-70, Rokinon 12mmf2, Canon lenses: 17-40L, 17-55 f2.8, 10-22, 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 70-200mm IS 2.8, 300mm 2.8 IS, 580EXII (3), 430EX, Alien Bees.
