i love this shot of the moon. the other half wants me to try to get something similar. using a csanon 70d and the only zoom lens i have is a 17-50. what settings would acheive something similar to youe pic?

You need a LOT more focal length than a 17-50. These nice moon-only shots need something like 600-1000 mm of focal length on a crop, depending on your local conditions and how much you are willing to crop.

I would say 300-500 would work with cropping. I have even seen some decent photos taken with the 55-250 lens at 250.

Yes, if you have good seeing in your area, you can do a lot more cropping than you can in places with poorer seeing.

This. Especially with all the pixels the 70D has to offer. You can easily use the 55-250 @250, heavily crop, and still have a very nice photo

I shot this with an Celestron C8 + Focal Reducer F6.3 and a Canon 40D. You don't need the super high end camera to do great moon capture

Nice shot, clear, in focus and the colors look natural.

Moon was close to Saturn this morning so I hauled out the old Orion Skywatcher 1000mm F/6.3 to see if I could capture both in one frame. No luck, but Moon looked OK.

Used the 300mm with 1.4X to get them both but need more magnification to see Saturn.

The last one is taken with EOS M and Magic Lantern 3x crop video thru 900mm telescope. Lots of potential in video stacking, I must try again once it's clear.
