Then you know how disappointed I am in these shots! It just kills me to be in a place that is so beautiful and get such terrible shots. But I can't complain too much since my place is in all of them. I will get it eventually and will have some great shots from the top of Schweitzer and, with any luck, above Hope looking down.

This is my biggest problem. I don't know how to compose a shot. I can look at something and think "that would be a cool shot" but if you asked me why I could only say "because it looks cool." That is why I kind of gravitate to sports photography-the composition takes care of itself. But I love landscape photography and it kills me that I can't get it right.

Something that I enjoy so much can be so frustrating.

By the way, Jon, I see that you have the 400mm. I posted another thread about deciding between the 300mm F4 IS and the 400mm F5.6. I am considering this lens mostly for photographing my son's lacrosse games. Would you please give me your thoughts on the 400?

Wow you must be so lucky to live in such a beautiful place! Wish someday I could be there and take such amazing shots!

Thread starter, also, there's no reason to compose with horizon in the middle unless you want to get some clouds in or see a great symmetrical reflection. Just an empty blue sky means you should crop downwards. It's all about where the interesting features are in the frame and in the scene. tldr: crop or reframe to avoid vast empty blue skies

10mm fan.

When you use a ultra wide angle, you MUST use something in the foreground to catch the viewers eye. Look for a plant in flower, an unusual shaped/coloured rock anything to get some interest in the shot. Then look to showcase what was a nice sky and view.

1) no focal point and the view is a spec on the horizon ( a classic mis use of and ultra wide lens, nothing strong in the foreground )

2) a hazy shot with nothing of interest to look at. ( wrong time of day maybe )

3) you've don't the right thing, got down low to get the pebbles into the foreground, but they aren't sharp, where were your focus points ? The sky is way too blue, you can see where the filter has been used by the disparity between light and dark blue.

Still, tomorrow's another day :)
