95% of my shots with vintage glass are all peaking based, sometime I zoom in when I feel DOF is too think, like the 85 shot indoors or tight half body with the 135.

I have mine turned to red and high, and fire off when I get twinkles in the eyes. With medium or low, I never get twinkle eyes, however, with high, just enough to get the twinkle eye effect, and more often than not, it lands.

I also tend to land better with old vintage lenses with really long focus throws. Shorter focus throws like EF lenses tend to miss a lot for me. Just not fine tuned enough for me.

^Interesting, I'll have to give that a try, but I'm not always shooting people and I found that with the peaking on high just about anything contrasty would light up... made it really confusing.

My step-dad was getting ready to throw out some old vintage cameras he inherited from his father and thankfully he let me look through them. There were a couple of rangefinders in there, one Voigtlander VITO III and a Leica D.R.P. with a little collapsable 50mm f3.5 Leitz lens on it. I tried free lensing it on the a7R, I'm going to have to get an adapter to give this thing a go... it's so tiny it's comical

I thought I read somewhere that front and back focussing isnt an issue on mirrorless (I cant remember the technical reason why). Has the body even got miocroadjust function?

The camera has a MFA function, but yeah focus calibration issues is more of a DSLR issue...where you have the camera focusing based on the image on the mirror, and snapping the shot with the sensor. The inherent miscalibration between the mirror and sensor will throw the focus off...which is why many people on DSLR's rely on live view if they want to nail the focus.

I do the same...I have mine set to yellow, and high, as medium or low don't really refine the focus well enough for me. I too look for the 'twinkle eyes' as confirmation that I've nailed the focus.

And yeah some lenses really do MF easier than others. I have a lot of trouble manual focusing the native FE lenses...really short throws and focus by wire is a nightmare to MF. The 85L is a problem child to MF.

I've found that if I want to be sure I nail focus using non Sony lenses, I always try to use magnify assist. All the shots I took yesterday of the Costas hummer was using magnify assist. This one is a 100% crop. Handheld, 400mm @ f5.6.

For comparison, this is the full frame that the 100% crop is from. Even focus peaking isn't enough for me at this kind of shallow DOF. Most likely because of my age/eyesight, although I suppose the peaking itself could be off.

Try turning the focusing ring slower. At least with the FE55 (the only native FE lens I own), if I turn the focusing ring slower, it lets me focus with more gradual increment. Conversely, if you want to jump from min. dist. to infinity, just twist the focusing ring really fast, it can cover the dist. in less than 1/4 of a turn.

If it's in focus, it's pornography, if it's out of focus, it's art.
