Thanks. That is one of my favorite spots to shoot...its always a little different.

Thanks!

Beautiful job! How did you calculate the exposure time?

I personally use an app called exposure calculator...
1) Enter in your "unfiltered" exposure parameters (ISO, Aperture, shutter speed)
2) Enter total filter stops
3) Enter desired aperture and ISO (I usually keep the aperture the same, but vary the ISO)
4) It spits out new shutter speed :)

I have a phone app too but can't recall it at the moment.

It's also in my brain that 1/100th equals 20 seconds with my 10 stop & the way I expose for it so I can usually be pretty accurate at guessing mine with experience.

1/100th is officially 10 seconds on paper btw ;)

Mine is Exposure Calculator too - An Orange symbol.

I use "LongTime" it's pretty easy.

You choose how many stops you've put on and you choose the metered exposure (without filters). It then gives you the time with the filter. It usually gets me where I want to be within a few seconds.

Killin it Travis!

With regard to exposure time I set the normal exposure, add the 10 stop filter then click the shutter dial 33 times (my big stopper is 11 stops). If I hit the 30 second limit I do the rest of the maths in my head for the bulb duration. I've also got a phone app for days when my brain won't work :)

Yep, 13, I have shot with as many as 16 stops after the sun comes up...the trouble with fading light and 13 stops...there is a big difference in light over 2-5 minute time spans...so it usually has to be pulled up in post to avoid blowing highlights.

Exposure Calculator on my phone when I get lazy and don't want to do it in my head.

Yep Long Time is what i use, but i like to keep my mental arithmetic on its toes so try and work out. Another handy hint is that 10 stops means that 2^10 (=2*2*2*.. ten times) which is 1024, or roughly 1000, is the factor that light is reduced by. So if its 1/30 you multiply by 1000 which is the same as 100/3 which is roughly 30 seconds. I find this is my quickest work, and sometimes you dont have a phone handy.

Since it is almost always the shutter speed that you are changing, I printed a table of major shutter speeds, with 1 F-stop changes. I then just count down 10 stops from what the camera read without the filter. I round the meter reading to the nearest full shutter speed stop, count down 10, and then apply the rounding to the result in the opposite direction. The card is a small item that I keep with the filter.

Rather than relying on my non existent math skills, I use the iPhone App "Long Exposure Calculator" which even has a timer built in if your exposure is over 30 seconds.

Also, those of us with Lee Big Stoppers and Little Stoppers, a chart is provided which does the math for you.

Because you all are talking about calculating exposure times and such and you know that saying, something about no stupid questions...

Well I'm curious - I know my camera (at least my 70D - not sure I've checked my 6D) you could choose shutter speeds as slow as 30 seconds, and then there is bulb for anything longer, right? So when some of you guys are doing exposures of 2+ minutes, is there something I'm missing, or are you guys having to hold down the shutter button while counting or watching a timer or something?

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, on the 6D, just use bulb mode for longer than 30 secs. Press remote trigger once to start exposure, press 2nd time to end. I think the 6D also have a regular timer (not count down timer) as the exposure is taking place so you know how much time has passed.
