Because you all are talking about calculating exposure times and such and you know that saying, something about no stupid questions...

Well I'm curious - I know my camera (at least my 70D - not sure I've checked my 6D) you could choose shutter speeds as slow as 30 seconds, and then there is bulb for anything longer, right? So when some of you guys are doing exposures of 2+ minutes, is there something I'm missing, or are you guys having to hold down the shutter button while counting or watching a timer or something?

Thanks!

Yes after 30 seconds you have to put your camera in "bulb" mode. Then you can either hold down your shutter button for the desired length of time---> NOT recommended, because you WILL have camera shake and a useless shot. OR you can purchase a cable shutter release where the fire button has a locking position...problem solved. :)

You use a shutter cable. All of them have a way to press the button and slide it forward so it stays depressed. I haven't used the 50D in bulb mode yet but I recall the 5D2 having a counter right on the top display. I usually used the stopwatch feature on one of my watches to time the shot.

I have a LCD Timer Shutter Release Remote Control for my T3. You should be able to find one compatible with your 70D.

When you use "bulb", you press the shutter once and the shutter opens. Enjoy your coffee while watching your stopwatch. At the appropriate time, press the shutter again and the shutter will close. Good technique here is to use a remote triggering device so as not to cause movement with the camera.

The manual recommends that you cover the eyepiece during the long exposures, since your eye/face will not be up against the back of the camera, and stray light can enter the camera through the eyepiece and cause contamination of the exposure inside the body.

Man you guys are awesome, thanks for the info, I appreciate it!!!

If I remember correctly, on the 6D, just use bulb mode for longer than 30 secs. Press remote trigger once to start exposure, press 2nd time to end. I think the 6D also have a regular timer (not count down timer) as the exposure is taking place so you know how much time has passed.

Interesting pyrospawn, I'll have to give this a test. I have two remote triggers... I have a cheap IR and a RF Yongnuo.

Thanks, I'll test out my wireless options and see if I can get one to work like pyrospawn says, but I'll definately have to look into a cable w/lock too.

I use "bulb timer" function on magic lantern. Dial in the exposure time, start the exposure and the camera will stop the exposure after the desired time

I use one of three things...a wired intervalometer, a wireless remote or Trigger Trap. I like the Intervalometer the most of the three.

I need to install that on both my cameras...I think it owuld be so much easier..and one less item to pack in the bag...sounds like a job for this weekend.

I used that for the first time this weekend, it works great, but I need to find a good way to secure my phone...it came unplugged and nearly wound up in the lake...and it drains my phone battery...
