Winter Bird Photography

My fave subject to photograph in the winter are the various species of owl's we have in southern Ontario. So far this year the Snowy, Long Eared, and Barred have been photographed and was looking for the Great Gray and Norhtern Hawk Owl's to add to the list. if anyone has any locations on either of these 2 species fell free to contact me and i would be up for a drive if necessary. Paul you definitely have some excellent shots on your flickr link. I checked on ebird and it seems that if you want to see Great Gray's you might have to drive a bit north of Quebec City.

As far as the Northern Hawk Owl goes , they do seem difficult to find anywhere close to you. Again according to people posting to ebird it looks like you would have to drive into Quebec for your best chance of finding one.

I have noticed you have many excellent owl shots from Amherst Island. I was thinking about driving up there next month. How do you find this year to be for Snowy's and Saw - Whet's in that area? How about Wolfe Island?

Thanks kindly Jim for the info a road trip may be in the cards in the near future. Wolfe Island is the best for Snowy owls this year, the west side of the island is best. Drive these roads and you will see them for sure:

Baseline Rd; Reed's Bay Rd; 4th/5th/7th line Rd's.

There is only 1 Saw-whet that I know of in the "Owl Woods" on amherst island this winter, a few snowies but Wolfe Island is the best for the snowy this year for sure.
