I believe I read somewhere that you can use the newer Kenko with decent results.

Yeah one of the kenko 1.4x is supposedly compatible with functional AF

Not 100% which one...all the different kenko 1.4x extenders confuse the hell out of me...mc4 dgx pro...

i think this is the one you want http://www.adorama.com/KN14XPEOSDGX.html (external link)

This one

I am debating getting one, I have heard that in well lit places it works ok for AF, but remember you are losing a stop so at the far end all you have is f/8 for autofocus, the converter lies to the camera to make it think it is still at 5.6 so AF will still work, but if the target is not well lit or high contrast it won't be able to find it.

i wouldn't plan on having reliable AF...i think you should be prepared to MF the lens most of the time with a TC on it...

Keyan please help me understand this about the Kenko converter. Wow the price sure looks good. 189 vs 449 canon

Full AF operation with Pro 300 2.0x DGX is possible when using camera lenses with maximum aperture of F2.8 or brighter. Please be aware that AF will work properly only if there is enough light and contrast on the subject to activate the camera's AF sensors. (Manual focusing is required when using lenses with smaller maximum f-stop value than those given above.)

I am assuming you have to use 2.8 or faster or manual focus right. So that right off the bat is going to make a soft image correct?

Thanks Bobby

I have used the Kenko Pro 300 DGX with my 60D and 6D with the 70-300L.
Works better with the 6D of course but not bad at all in daylight with the 60D.
Only had to use manual focus in low light with the 60D.

I tried the Kenko with my 70-300L a year ago. Although the viewfinder and EXIF showed f/8 at 300mm, my 70D at least tried to autofocus. Successful autofocus depended more on scene contrast and the presence of sharp edges in the picture than on light level. The camera would autofocus indoors on a suitable subject but not on hazy outdoor scenes. I did not try live view autofocus, which should work down to f/11.

Optical results seemed good, but I found I could get comparable results without the converter by cropping the picture. On my 70D that still leaves me about 10 megapixels, which is usually enough. So I sent back the converter.

I have a Kenko DG that works with my 70-300L. The DG does not report in the EXIF, so it will still indicate f/5.6 but does focus on the 70D. I found the AF is much snappier on the live view but can still lock on through the viewfinder. As others mention, a suitable subject is necessary. I am selling mine though to put funds towards a 150-600.
